Driving with Birdie

Before I blog... let's get something straight. I'm a good driver. I don't speed. I try not to talk on my cell phone. I don't text and drive. I am polite.

Angry drivers are easy to pick out. They speed, swerve, and have no consideration for those around them. When angry drivers get on the road, its them against the world.

Angry drivers have the power to ruin my day, which is quite sad actually. You'd think I'd be able to let go of someone else's anger. But nope-- that's not how I'm built.

Knowing this, I shouldn't have taken it personally when an angry driver flipped me off the other day. But of course I did.

I was minding my own business on Highway 40 when a car came out of nowhere. The driver almost side-swiped my car while swerving across three lanes of the highway.

I couldn't believe this driver was being so reckless. So, I politely honked my horn. And it was definitely a polite honk: short and sweet. I didn't want to be rude.

So when I looked over at the driver-- he scowled at me. And then I saw it. His middle finger went up right in front of his face and he continued to stare.

I couldn't believe it. I did nothing wrong except for the honk, which like I said, was polite. Definitely, nothing that should warrant the birdie.

I have a friend who has no problem flipping off a driver who gets in her way. Now, you should know she usually hopes the other person doesn't see the finger. But still... I can't imagine this woman ever pulling out the birdie if not protected by the confines of her SUV.

So here's what I'm wondering. A stranger would never flip me off in an off-road setting. So, why is it OK for someone flip me off while driving down the road?

Yet another reason to take the Metro. No angry drivers... and I'm pretty sure I won't get flipped off.
