I have been to the border - and have a better understanding of what we face trying to defend it! Last week, I had a chance to accompany Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt to the Yuma, Arizona border with Mexico. Missouri National Guard units are now on three week rotations there, helping the Border Patrol detect and prevent illegal border crossings. We flew aboard a Blackhawk helicopter, and it was really amazing to see the vast expanse we're trying to cover 24/7. In the Yuma Sector last year, 138,000 people were caught trying to enter the United States, which means many more probably successfully entered. Honestly, from the air you cannot tell where the U.S. ends and Mexico begins. Even if we build a fence it will still take thousands of agents to watch for breaches. I don't know the answer, but since Guard troops were put on the ground, attempts to cross have dropped by 75%.
