Reaction is pouring in to Katie Couric's CBS News debut, and it appears to be mixed so far. KMOV.COM is even asking viewers to vote on the new addition, and so far the negatives responses are topping the positive reviews by nearly 48%. Personally, I think the uproar over her is a bit premature, and actually, a little bit silly. Today I even read criticism of Ms. Couric for wearing white after Labor Day! I think CBS has bigger concerns than the personal performance of Couric, because she is a veteran anchor, and she'll handle the job professionally as well as anyone could. In fact, I think her morning show experience will be her biggest advantage, because it has prepared her to handle different formats and interview situations, and a wide variety of breaking news situations. From a journalistic viewpoint, CBS needs to worry more about content. If their core viewers detect less news content, and more style and entertainment content, they stand to lose far more viewers than they stand to gain. It can't become the PM Today show. Katie Couric will win viewers for CBS the same way she won viewers for NBC - because people like her. The CBS News executives need to build her a platform supported by solid journalism and plenty of it, not empty packaging.
