If you've ever read the book "Who Stole My Cheese", you'll appreciate the fact that all things change, and you've got to change with them - or starve. For broadcasters, that change has been creeping up on us since the early 80's. The Associated Press is reporting that broadcast TV reached a new low-water mark last week: CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX averaged a combined 20.8 million viewers during the average prime-time minute. While it seems like a big number, it's the lowest in recorded history, but it's far from a surprise. Cable and satellite programming have long been eating away at the broadcast audience for primetime, and News is no exception. Summer ratings are traditionally lower, with vacations and all, but this has to be disturbing news for network bigwigs. On the bright side, morning news broadcasts are seen as the biggest opportunity for audience growth. My "cheese" moved to mornings 10 years ago, and it looks like that's a good thing!
