The condition of the cemetery outraged Tammy Roby, who can't find the grave of her great-grandfather. The picture at the left shows Ms. Roby standing in the center of the cemetery. She asked us to look into the problem. The city of Berkeley, which is responsible for enforcing building and property codes at the cemetery, has done a lousy job of holding the owners accountable for the condition of the site. Five months ago, the city found the property was in violation of city codes. The cemetery had been owned for many years by WPC Parks Inc., which had cleaned up much of the cemetery during the late 90s. But the company ran out of money and sold the property to Amazing Grace Enterprises LLC over the summer. The new owner, Kevin Bailey, says he's concerned about the property because his father is buried there. Bailey told me he bought Washington Park for $2 so he could clean it up. So far, he appears to have done virtually nothing. The day after we contacted the city of Berkeley about the cemetery, it issued a notice of violation to Bailey's company. Acting City Manager Frank McCall insists the city is "on top of it," and will do what's needed to make sure the cemetery is cleaned up. The disgraceful condition of the cemetery isn't lost on any of the people I interviewed for this story. Kevin Bailey seems genuinely interested in turning the property into a respectful burial grounds and is trying to raise the money needed to do it. He has his work cut out for him.

I was deeply moved by the story on Washington Park Cemetery. I like Ms. Roby, also have relatives buried there, my mother, grandmother and grandfather and two aunts. Out of the five I only know where 3 of the graves are located. I think I am the only member of my family who knows where the graves are and I want to share this information with them but how can you when you can't even get to the graves? As a young child my mother would take me on what was then called, Decoration Day to decorate the graves of family members and I had carried on that tradition until May of this year when I was appalled at how high the weeds had become, I couldn't even get to her grave. My heart feels the pain that Ms. Roby feels and I don't see how anyone who claims to be the owner has not made some effort to correct the problem there. My father who will soon be 96 had for a time hired someone to keep the area clear of weeds around my mother's grave but it is terrible now. I had written to the Mayor of Berkeley asking for help and have not received even an acknowledgement of my letter. I do hope that Chief McCall will continue to hold the owners accoutnable and not let this matter slip through the cracks it is too important to us and our families. THANK YOU KMOV for your diligence and investigation I appeal to you to not allow this matter to fall by the wayside but keep all parties accountable.
I was deeply moved by the story on Washington Park cemetery. I, like Ms. Roby also have relatives buried there. On my last visit in May I was so upset at the condition of the cemetery and being unable to visit my mother's grave, I wrote to the Mayor of Berkeley notifying her of the conditions I found and asking for help. As of yet, I have received no answer or acknowledgment of my letter. As a child my mother took us to the cemetery on special days especially Decoration Day now called Memorial Day and we put flowers on the graves of our relatives so I think I am the only one who actually knows the location of the graves but how can I pass this on not having the ability to even get to the graves? I don't agree with Chief McCall that he is doing everything to get the situation rectified, or it wouldn't have taken this long. I do hope that a sense of responsibility is awakened not only for those who are buried there but to the families who can no longer visit the graves of loved ones. It is a very painful experience to go there and see such appalling conditions.
Thank you KMOV for exposing this situation and PLEASE do not let anyone off the hook who has any ability to set this situation right. Families are in pain because of this and it needs to be acted upon quickly.
