News 4 Investigates: Extended Auto Warranties

Our story focused on StopRepairBills.com, a company that aggressively markets extended auto warranties. The warranties, which can cost $2,000 or more for two years of coverage, are administered by "about a dozen" different companies, according to StopRepairs spokesman Michael Carter.

StopRepairs shares a St. Peters office building with National Dealers Warranty Inc. The Better Business Bureau gives the companies an F rating based on more than 300 consumer complaints during the past three years and other issues. The BBB report also shows that the companies resolved or administratively closed all of those cases.

Our report was prompted by a complaint by Shirley Allen. Ms. Allen bought coverage through StopRepairs. The coverage was administered by a third party, but much of her anger is directed at StopRepairs, which she believes mislead her about the coverage.

StopRepairs insists that it was in the process of paying for Ms. Allen's claim when we called. Even Carter admits it should have been paid, and that Ms. Allen should not have been forced to wait nearly three weeks to get the vehicle repaired. Carter told me the car would be fixed this week, although he called it a coincidence that Ms. Allen's repeated complaints were addressed after we contacted the company.

You can file consumer complaints with the BBB, the Illinois Attorney General and the Missouri Attorney General.

I have had a warranty with StopRepairBills.com for some time now and have never had an issue with them. Not to mention the warranty is not through Mepco, if you had done your research before setting up the interview then you would have known that they are the company that finances the warranty. I have had 2 repairs done on my car and both of them have been paid for. The only money I had out of pocket was for an item that was clearly stated wasn't covered. The total of my claims may not have amounted to too much some people would think, $2000, but I am just greatful that I didn't have to pay myself. The only problem I had with the warranty company, not StopRepairBills.com, who weren't the ones to pay for the repair, was that it was a little difficult to get thru to the claims department, but once the shop got a hold of them, it all went really quick. I also was concerned about the BBB rating but after reading what some of the complaints were, which included them not paying for claims, again they have nothing to do with that protion of the contract, and reading that all of the complaints were resolved in one way or another, I figured I would stick with them and see for my self. Boy am I glad that I did.
