News 4 Investigates: Rock Top Ripoff?

On December 24th, News 4 ran a story about a family that's missing a very important feature countertop.jpg in their kitchen, the countertops. They'd removed the previous countertops and the sink in preparation for a company that was contracted to install new granite countertops. brochure photo.jpg They picked out attractive new granite countertops and paid for them. But found out that the company had gone out of business and they were without their countertops and the thousands they'd paid to have them installed.

business.jpg Calls keep pouring in to News 4 Investigates about Rock Tops Granite, a company with locations in Maryland Heights, O'Fallon, Missouri and several other states. Angry customers have started posting their stories on the internet at sites like, RipoffReport.com. The Better Business Bureau in St. Louis confirms that Rock Tops Granite has gone out of business. The company is headquartered in Michigan, but the Better Business Bureau office in Detroit has been unable to contact anyone at the company to find out if they plan to reimburse Price.jpg customers who paid in advance for countertops that they never received. If we get any information, we'll pass it along.

The BBB recommends that you never put more than a third down on a project and if the company pressures you to pay more upfront, you should find someone else to do business with. If you've done business with Rock Top Granite and are trying to get your money back, if you paid with a credit card, the BBB recommends you contact your credit card issuer to dispute the charges. And customers who paid by cash or check should consult an attorney to determine their legal options in resolving any disputes.

i just wanted to let you know.. i am a former employee of rock tops. i got layed off from the company on december 15th. i got word that the company was no longer on december 19th. the employees that have worked for the company have not received their final paychecks as of the end of the year. we were told that we would get paid for the time worked and that the company has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy. i have tried to do some searching on the net for any information to confirm this, but have not received any luck. we were also told that before the bankruptcy could go through the company had to pay their employees according to michigan state laws. i don't know how much of this is true. but thats what the employees are getting told. i do not agree with how all of this has been handled... if i was one of rock tops customers i would be infuriated!! i truely feel for all of them for what this company has done. let me tell you as much as all of the articles the owners are in talking about how much they appreciate their employees and customers... they really show it. (yea right) that was our christmas gift from a suppose to be reputeable company. we are trying just as hard to get our hard earned money from the company just like the customers. we will see... thanks for the informaion

WE bought an island counter top and had it installed. We paid them with a credit card. Is there any threat to having the company go back and fraudulently use our card again? Have there been any reports about that?

Thank you,

Andy

I searched federal bankruptcy court records and cannot find a record of Rock Tops Granite filing bankruptcy. Please contact me so I can learn more about the impact on employees when the company shut its doors. Email me at rkinsaul@kmov.com. thanks, Russell Kinsaul

If you go to www.michstone.com, there is a forum posted with advice and comments from Rock Tops customers and employees. There is Legal advice available in the forum as well.

My husband and I also got ripped off by Rock Tops. Our wonderful cabinet supplier (Hollywood Cabinets) told us about Rock Tops closing their doors and no one being able to contact them.

We raced over and found that no one would answer the doors and that automobiles with Georgia license plates sat in the parking lot along with their other trucks. Also in back of the warehouse was a cart with slabs of granite, one looked like the one we put our down payment on..........

Why is it they still have their website up?

We paid 50% as initial installment for kitechn counter tops. We are shocked to learn that they are out of business. I am sure the employees knew about what was going on in their company at the time when we signed the contract, but they didn't even give us clue. Fortunately, I paid them using my credit card. Not sure wheta's going to happen next. Cheaters all around...

My boyfriend worked for rock tops out in macomb Michigan and he never knew that this was evening coming. Back in September they started cutting everyones pay by 15%, but then again with the economy we never thought anything of it. He left another job to work for them for better pay, and I know to this day he regrets it and talk about not having a good xmas, he never got his two weeks of pay to be able to buy gifts for his two kids.

Thank god I have a good job, but the way this company treated there employees and customers is just not right. I have to see my boyfriend feeling all depressed over this situation and it kills me to see him like this.

We just got done getting caught up in our bills and house and then this all crashed upon us over xmas break.

He a great person and a great worker and I am hoping for the best for him and all the other people out there.

They directly affected and lead to the closing down of Acropolis Marble, a company that dominated retail in St. Louis for years with the exception of several other large players. I figured if you cant beat them join them so they flew me down. Their methods on alerting their customers to the inherent problem,s with stone was non existant. After pointing out a number of things that their templaters were doing incorrectly, pointing out that their contracts informed the customers of absolutely nothing, and even tried to remedy the problems for them by incorporating proper procedures developed by myself over 14 years to compliment their vision they merely said ...you dont need to do that, we have the customers money, if there is a dispute let them take us to court. This was in October. I feel bad for all the people out there but this should be a lesson that the cheapest is not always the best. Acropolis tried to warn everyone

I own a fabrication shop in Cleveland, Ohio. If there are any people that were taken by Rock Tops in Cleveland or the surrounding area, please give me a call at 216-773-1800. If there is anything we can do to get your tops installed or fabricated we would be willing to help in any way we can. Please have all of your information regarding payments and perhaps we can find some way to finish your job for the balance due or for some additional charge within your budget. We've seen this happen before in our 18 years and no one is safe. In recent history I've had to help a Police Officer and his wife who is a Councilwoman finish their kitchen after their fabricator took their deposit and left town. Take my advice and don't use a fabricator that is too big or one that is a backyard mechanic. The larger companies have to produce as many as 4 kithcens a day to breakeven and the backyard mechanics are usually uninsured, undermanned and non-compliant when it comes to running a ligitimate business.

My wife and I placed an order for a small bath vanity on Dec. 12, 2008. Paid half upfront by credit card. Paid second half by check at time of measure on Dec. 15, 2008. Was told by guy who did the measurement that we would be notified within three days of delivery date. He took an under mount sink we had purchased from a different company, to have it mounted to the vanity top. From that point on we could not contact anyone at Rock Tops. We have filed a report with Macomb County Sheriff's Dept. and have contacted an attorney. Was told by someone that the owner took all the customers money estimated at 1 million dollars from the company account and has disappeared. We fell badly not only for ourselves but also for all the customers and employees who have lost in this deal.

I had Rock Tops put in my new counter tops in November. They did a great job but the sink they supplied started scratching in weeks of installation. The manufacturer is sending a new one to replace it but they can't reimburse installation since they worked thru Rock Tops. If any of the ST. Louis installers want to do the job on the side hit me back at ntimesstl@hotmail.com

Really sorry to hear so many got taken due to poor management.

I live in Columbus, Ohio ... I received a flier from Rock Tops in November promoting a great deal on granite counter tops -- which included a free extra slab installed in another room and an 18 gage stainless steel sink and faucet-- although I wasn't in the market for new counters- I had burned a hole in my existing one several years before-- after visiting the Rock Tops show room on Roberts Road I decided it was too good a deal to pass up. Although my instincts told me never to pay in full before completion of a project- - I didn't want to miss this deal-- I paid in full using cash. total was approximately $2500- I was lucky my counters were installed just days before Rock Tops closed- - but I still learned several valuable lessons. 1. never pay in advance (especially in this unstable economy) 2. always use a credit card (not a debit card) so you can have some recourse when situations like this arise. Bottom line: if my installation had been scheduled for several days later I would have been %#@! out of luck. I am sorry for all who lost their money- - had it been me I would have had no counter tops for a very long time. Given the extreme discounts offered I wouldn't be surprised if this was simply a scheme for the owners of the company to sandbag as much cash as possible - it seems very intentional to me.

Howdy All
Just another sorry sucker here .... just found out 2 hours ago about all this. We hired Rock Top on Dec. 5th to install new counter tops in our kitchen scheduled for today. We tried calling around 10 am this morning when no one showed up to see why, only to find out after a trip to their office that they were out of business. We immediately called our credit card company and found out they had taken our 50% down payment which was authorized and the balance 50% which was unauthorized a week or so later. So I would advise if you did pay with a credit card to check for unauthorized charges from them. THANK GOD our credit card company has refunded both charges (although it will take 45 days to clear). I was also surprised that my Credit Card Company had already gotten calls about Rock Tops and had to refund money as early as last month.

Hoping everyone paid with credit cards!!!!!!!!

I am a former employee of Rock Tops, I was hired on Novemer 8th 2008 for a new store in Lenexa Kansas.....everything was fine, went to work on a Monday and we were told they were letting everyone but one person in our store go and a guy from Michigan was there to help.......he fired all of us and told us he was as surprised as us....ha ha I feel terrible being associated with them at all and all the granite that people had paid for....and no the employees didn't know a thing.....and yes they do owe me and all of the stores employees money....

Paid Rocktops almost $4k. I thought it strange they asked for all the $ before the job was complete. I changed the contract to reflect the 2nd payment coming after the job was complete to our satisfaction. The district rep was at the store that day and said as the largest granite installer in the nation and with a 99% satisfaction rate (he pointed to the huge yellow banner in their showroom), he said I had nothing to worry about. If we were satisfied, he said I had an established and excellent track record company who would be there to make it right.

Since I had lined out and rewritten sections of the contract, he went and got a new copy for me to sign - what a sucker I was - the price was good and my wife and I have been saving for 5 years for this luxury item.

This was supposed to be my wife's Christmas and 16th Anniversary present......I've filed with the Kansas Attorney General - suggest everyone else do likewise.

My husband and I got our countertops at the beginning of Dec. after a reschedule because one of the tops (around the sink) was cracked. The installation crew called the morning of installation as the handy man for my old countertop was literally minutes from ripping it out. I was very frustrated at the lack of organization from the company. No phone calls to customers. The manager (who's name is on the bbb's rating) NEVER called me back when he said he would. It wasn't till I chewed out "his boss" (who knows where he was from. That is just what the man said) that things started to happen. The people that installed and measured were hard workers. It was the store people that seemed to be like greasy slimeballs unwilling to please their customers. Should I be calling my credit card company and making sure that they can't use my card again? sorry to all those not as fortunate as me.

Does anyone know what the brand name of the Rock Tops "free" faucets is? I had my kitchen countertop installed just before the company went broke and now need to replace the hose of the faucet they installed. There is no brand name on the faucet and no warranty. If I cannot replace the hose I will have to buy the whole faucet. Thanks! djreardon@hotmail.com

Does anyone have an actual copy of their contract that they can pdf to me? I am in Minnesota and want to ensure that "Rock-tops Natural Stone Fabrication & Installation" is not the same Rock Tops, before I even consider signing the contract for my counter tops. I have check with the MN Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau and the MN Secretary of States office and no one has any good or bad information.
