Veni, vidi, veto.

Tonight, President Bush is expected to veto legislation that would begin America's withdrawl from Iraq.

It's a showdown between legislative and executive branches the media has seen coming for weeks.

So you think we could get this right.

Headlines and news reports from across the country trumpet the president's "veto pen" is ready to do its duty in rejecting this piece of legislation.

There's just one problem with that.

The president doesn't use a pen to veto a bill.

He just sends it back to congress... unsigned.

So what about that pen? Well, the only time the president need put pen to paper is to sign his name to a letter objecting to the bill.

From Wikipedia:

The President is constitutionally required to state his objections to the legislation in writing, and the Congress is constitutionally required to consider them, and to reconsider the legislation.

A technicality? Sure.

But it's important to get the little things right.
