Blow by blow with Bill-O'

I consume a lot of media... and a lot of different types of media.

So it should come as no surprise I was listening to FOX News bombaster Bill O'Reilly's radio show yesterday morning.

On most days, I find O'Reilly mildly entertaining. Occasionally he makes a good point. But yesterday I just wasn't seeing eye to eye with the man.

Bill-O' spent the better part of two hours talking about a tragic incident in Virgina Beach, Va. Two teenage girls died when their car was hit by a drunk driver. The drunk driver also happened to be an illegal immigrant. He also had two prior drunk driving arrests.

I'm alarmed our court system would let a two-time drunk driver get behind the wheel for a third spin. But Bill turned his discourse-mobile down a different road.

Virgina Beach is what's called a "sanctuary city," meaning police will not turn an illegal immigrant over to the immigration authorities if they're picked up for a crime like... oh, drunk driving.

So even if police knew this guy was in the country illegally, they can't ship him back to Mexico.

Well, that doesn't sound right either. Last time I checked, police were reponsible for enforcing all of the laws, not just the laws they feel warm and fuzzy about.

So let's recap... we have a repeated drunk driver who is in the country illegally and a group of cops who didn't turn him over to the feds when they discovered he was an illegal alien.

According to Mr. O'Reilly, this means the police (and the city government by association) are responsible for the deaths of the two young girls because the driver was not deported when police picked him up the first time.

I can see how you could get from Point A to Point C, but it's kind of a tortured trip.

As is his wont, Bill-O' was calling for the ouster of the police chief, mayor, dog catcher... anyone he saw as responsible for allowing these poor young girls to be killed by an illegal immigrant.

"The buck stops with the mayor," O'Reilly told a caller who was trying to argue common sense.

The "discussion" continued last night on O'Reilly's news/comment program on the FOX cable channel.

His foil? Fellow FOX news/commentator Geraldo Rivera.

Oh, this is a doozy.

You know you've crossed a line when Geraldo seems like the reasonable adult in the room.

* * *

When you're in a position as powerful as Bill O'Reilly, I would hope you would use that power to pick on the biggest fish you can find.

Demand the heads of justice department officials who don't develop relationships with local law enforcment, which leads to better enforcement of federal law.

Call for the resignation of immigration officials who came up with the policy that leaves vast swaths of the border open to penetration by illegal immigrants.

Get the president and congressional leaders on your show and hammer them about why they can't get together and fix a problem that threatens our national security.

Fry up the BIG FISH.

What does the all-powerful king of cable commentary do?

He picks on a figurehead mayor in a small Virgina town.

A guppie.

When someone goes after the people who can affect the most change, we call them brave.

When someone goes after a guppie... well, we have a word for that, too.

Bully.
