News 4 Investigates: Generator Gouging?

Enough with frivolity, folks... and back to the real news.

genny.gifLast night, we introduced you to a man who paid $1700 for a generator that should have cost him something in the neighborhood of $999.

He lost power on the first night of the November ice storm and made do with propane heaters until Monday morning. That's when he drove 30 miles to Precision Equipment in Farmington, Mo. to buy a generator.

When he got the generator home, our power outage victim had a hunch he had paid too much. He called the manufacturer to see what the suggested retail price on this item should be.

Sycamore Professional's president told us the same thing our storm victim learned... The generator has an MSRP of $999. The going rate in the St. Louis area is around $1100.

When our victim called the Missouri Attorney General's office, he learned he was not alone.

Six other customers filed similar complaints about the same Precision Equipment location. All of them bought Sycamore generators at a $600 mark-up.

tagclose.gifPrecision Equipment's owner, Bill Seely, refused to comment on his prices or the seven complaints filed with the AG's office.

But Doug Peacock, the president of Sycamore, had this to say.

"Unfortunately the dealer decided he needed to make a lot of money fast and that's just not something we endorse," Peacock said. "People up here were very upset that somebody out there who sells our product would try to take advantage."

Peacock went a couple steps further. He severed all ties with Precision Equipment and is co-operating fully with the Attorney General's ongoing investigation.
