More adventures in general assignment reporting

slmpd.gifOn tonight's 6 p.m. newscast, I filed a story about the number of sexual assaults reported to the St. Louis police department.

While the number of rapes is up, Chief Joe Mokwa says that's not entirely a bad thing. Mokwa says it's a sign more rapes are being reported -- not a sign more rapes are taking place.

Mokwa and a couple of women's advocates unveiled a new program designed to further increase the number of rape reports -- by making it easier and less intimidating for victims to come forward.

So if we see another jump in the rape stats next year... should we again say sex crimes aren't on the rise, but conclude it's because this program has worked really well?

After the news conference, we reporters and photographers were left to find our own way back to the elevators.

While lingering in the sixth floor lobby, I scanned the job postings to help kill time.

There were four jobs listed... two of them in the sex crimes department.
