We're giving it a shot here at the DB.

Let me know if this works for you.

...

I swear, I do.

And thank you to readers who posted comments in the past couple weeks. For some reason, your messages were not flagged as "new" and didn't pop up in the list that lets me approve or delete incoming comments.

And, yes, I delete comments... but not many.

Just play within these lines...

- Criticism is encouraged, personal attacks (on anyone) are not.
- Story ideas are welcome, writing 2,000 wo...

I'm feeling under the weather today, but that won't deter me from filing the Daily Briefing... from my couch... at home.

Did a Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville student cross a line when he turned his Facebook page into a gossip board about a female student and a sexual act?

The young woman at the center of the gossip says so. She told the Post-Dispatch:

...

The federal government has seen the light and will once again allow travellers to carry beverages onto aircraft, as long as those beverages were purchased in the secure area of the airport.

Bring your lotions and creams, too... as long as you play by the rules.

From the Associated Press:

New procedures also were announced for toiletries and products like lip gloss and hand lotion that passengers bring to the ai...

Because you asked for it... here are the stations we mentioned in last night's report about gas stations that under- and over-pump.

The under-pumpers:

#1 - Fisca Oil, West Alton
#2 - Pit Stop, West Alton
#3 - Is a tie between the BP on Highway 94 in St. Charles... the MC Food Mart in Overland... and the 66 Food Mart in Lake St. Louis

The over-pumpers

#1 - Pit Stop, West Alto...

Hello, everybody (all three of you) and happy Friday. Let's get right to the agenda.

Mmmbop until you drop.

A student at Oakville Sr. High School has a beef (legitimate, I say) with his school's strategy for raising $2,000 for Special Olympics.

It involves...

Now that you've seen which gas stations are the worst at short-changing customers at the pump, here's a calculator we've devised to give you an idea of what an out of tolerance gas pump could cost you.

Just plug in the number of gallons in your average fill-up... then the price of gas in your area... and the number of cubic inches the pump would be out of tolerance.

Presto! There appears the amount you'd be over-paying per fill...

After flirting with the $2 mark, the price of gas is back up again.

If that's not enough to frustrate you -- try this on for size. News 4 Investigates discovered some gas stations don't always pump the amount you pay for.

Tonight at 10, we'll show you the area's worst offenders... and the gas stations where they pump MORE than you pay for.

See you then.

They're some of the few remaining questions now that Abby Woods has been returned safely to her family.

Was Shannon Torrez pregnant? Did she kidnap young Abby after her own pregnancy ended in a miscarriage?

Law enforcement has been casting doubt on that theory all day.

From the St. Louis Post Dispatch website:

At a late afternoon news conference, authorities cast doubt on the claims about the ba...

At left, the police sketch of the suspect in Abby Woods' kidnapping.

At right, a mugshot of Shannon Torrez, the woman charged for that crime.

Would you have recognized Torrez based on the police sketch?

Send me an e-mail and let me know.

I'l...

Here's a statement from Procter & Gamble, the company that manufacturers Duracell batteries.

This is the best official explanation of the problem... heck, it's the ONLY explanation we've received.

And it didn't come from BRK First Alert.

We have received a limited number of reports that some older BRK Electronic Smoke Alarms may malfunction when used with Duracell 9-volt batteries. The problem is isolated...

E-mail from a local fire department:

Maybe it would be beneficial to post a link to report problems with the smoke detectors to the CPSC. Maybe an increase in the number of reports (due to your story) will push them into a recall.

We must make consumers aware of this potentially deadly situation.

Great job on the story.

Captain, Central County Fire & Rescue

It's always encouraging to hear from viewers after a story airs, but this was something special.

Within an hour of last night's story about the malfunctioning First Alert smoke alarms, I heard from a number of people who took immediate steps to prevent a potential disaster.

Here is a portion of what you had to s...

So why hasn't BRK or the Consumer Product Safety Commission initiated a recall of the First Alert 4120-B smoke alarms made before October, 2000?

That's a good question... and it's one we asked of both First Alert and the CPSC. Here's our e-mail to >> Continue reading: News 4 Investigates: Cause for alarm?

In the spring, we told you about a defect in a First Alert brand smoke detector that made it incompatible with a very popular brand of battery.

That defect was not just an annoyance that required customers to purchase the specific type of battery that actually WOULD work in their smoke alarm... for some, it was also a danger.

In one St. Peters subdivision, these smoke detectors and their...

Well, it's next week... and the DB still doesn't look how it's supposed to.

I hope the fine folks at kmov.com and BELO Interactive are close to getting to my spot on their to-do lists.

In the meantime...

Some of you have been kind enough to send us your thoughts on the new kmov.com. Thanks for your feedback, criticism and ideas.

Things look a little out of whack here lately, don't they?

We're in the process of re-launching kmov.com and some parts of the site are being updated a little more slowly than others. The DB, I'm told, won't be fixed until next week.

Don't they know who I am?

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Enjoy the new website. It's a ...
