September 2009 ArchivesI marvel at the job Mike Singletary has done with the 49ers. I think that team is what the Rams should strive to be in 2010--a moderately talented team that wins by playing hard-nosed, mistake-free, smart football. That's exactly the kind of team Steve Spagnuolo wants. How soon he can do it is the issue. The 49ers are a Brett Favre miracle finish away from being 3-0. And that's with a castoff quarterback and a wide receiving corps that... Sunday's game at the Dome is a battle of teams with underachieving offenses. The Packers have been a disappointment with the football. The Rams have been just plain anemic in every category other than running the ball. And there's the key for the Rams--get the ball into Steven Jackson's hands as often as possible. That means the defense will have to get the Packers off the field. Opposing teams are dominating time of possession and keeping Jac... I thought the Rams performance was flawed but improved in week two. Obviously, it wasn't good enough and a winnable game got away. To me the breakdown is real simple--the defense held the Redskins to nine points and played well enough to win. The offense did not. The Packers are next and this much we know: there will be Packers fans at the Dome. They travel and travel well. If the Packers win Sunday, I don't want to hear from other m... The Cubs come to town with a pulse that's faint at best. Had they won Wednesday and Thursday, there might be SOME cause for concern. But even if the Cards take just two of three, the magic number will fall to five. Two wins by the Cubs wouldn't really help keep them alive but at this point, for the Cardinals, it's more about playing good baseball heading into the postseason. With Smoltz, Carpenter and Wainwright pitching, I feel good ... Some quick thoughts about Sunday's game at Fed Ex Field: When the Rams have the ball, the middle of the field will be shut off. The 100 million dollar man Albert Haynesworth and linebacker London Fletcher will make attacking the middle of the line of scrimmage difficult. I'd love to see Pat Shurmur go no huddle and have Marc Bulger spread the ball around the field on both sides in true "west coast offense" style. The Rams need to keep ... I HATE the fact that the Seahawks have beaten the Rams nine straight times. Several of those games, including yesterday's game, were winnable. There is nothing special about the 2009 Seahawks but they get credit for making the plays to win the game. Two things killed the Rams Sunday--penalties and big plays. The Rams defense forced three turnovers and a three and out in the 'Hawks first four possessions. But the Rams couldn't take ada... The Patriots "spygate" scandal aside, I give NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell high marks in his time as head of the league. But, he made a mistake by cutting Michael Vick's suspension in half. Let me remind those who are ready to unload on me that I firmly believe Vick SHOULD BE allowed to resume his football career. He has done his time and now can return to his profession just as any other convicted citizen can. But his crimes were he... Before today's one hitter by Chris Carpenter I would have given the nod to Adam Wainwright in the Cy Young race based on Wainwright's ability to stay healthy all season. He delivered quality starts when the Cardinals needed them in the first half of the season. But after watching Carpenter dominate today, I'm keeping an open mind. Wainwright leads the league in wins but Carpenter leads the league in earned run average. That should alw... The Rams 2006 draft class is a bust. The trade of Tye Hill and the release of Joe Klopfenstein underscore that point. Three seasons after that draft, none of the five players picked in the top three rounds are still with the team. And none of the players chosen were difference makers. The two guys remaining from that draft--Victor Adayenju and Mark Setterstrom---are good players but that's not enough.
