June 2008 ArchivesLet me open this blog by saying I have on occasion asked a not so great question. I don't always conduct a Bob Costas quality interview. But I do attempt to put SOME effort into the interview. I hate it when a reporter tries to make the athlete/coach do all the work. And guess what, so does the athlete/coach. Case in point: the post game interview of Albert Pujols today. A guy says to Albert, "talk about the home run." Albert responde... Pretty dramatic headline, huh? I'm writing in response to the response I'm getting to Dan Caesar's column in the Post Dispatch. I've been surprised at how many people have expressed surprise or even shock that our number three full time sports reporter/anchor position has been eliminated. First, layoffs are happening in all markets across the country in all departments. But, the average t-v viewer wouldn't know that. It's a bad time i... The Cardinals are winning again. Tonight, they're beating the red hot Tigers 8-2 in the seventh inning. They keep on winning despite having more players on the D-L (10) than any other team this season. And, it's very possible Albert Pujols could be back by the weekend. Aaron Miles has another hit tonight and Adam Kennedy has an rbi single. Creative use of a hot hitter by Tony LaRussa by playing Kennedy at first base tonight. Shut up D... Wrong. Dead wrong. Couldn't have been more wrong. Last month in this blog, I said I thought the Lakers were the best team in the NBA. The Celtics clearly proved me wrong and I've never been happier to be wrong. The Lakers are as skilled as any team around but they are SOFT. How else do you explain losing a 24 point lead at home in the NBA Finals? Or getting absolutely pummeled in game six and not even mustering a fight. Phil Jackson needs one ... The Rams may have trouble signing Steve Jackson to a long term deal and if so you can point to the contract rookie Darren McFadden just signed with the Raiders. The deal "averages" ten million per season which about two mill more than Larry Johnson got from the Chiefs. The difference is Johnson is a proven NFL star and McFadden hasn't played a down in the league. Rookie salaries are out of control. The NFL needs to adopt the NBA's appr... Toughness was on display today in the two events I was tuned in to. First, Yadier Molina's physical toughness saved the game for the Cardinals. It was remarkable that he held on to the ball when he got blasted at home plate. If he drops the ball, the game ends in nine. He suffered what's called a minor concussion and isn't believed to be seriously hurt. Tiger Woods' mental and physical toughness extends the U.S. Open to an extra day. T... Tony LaRussa has just said it's too early to comment on the severity of Albert's calf injury suffered tonight at Cincinnati. He says the team will have a better idea tomorrow. Rookie Joe Mather took over for Albert at first base after Pujols left the game. Pujols was injured leaving the box in his seventh inning at bat. It's the same calf (left) that he injured last week. By the way, the Cardinals are just 1 and 3 this seas... The Cards stole one tonight at Cincinnati with Mitchell Boggs going five innings for the win. But how costly will the win be? Albert needed help getting off the field in the 7th after injuring the same calf that he hurt last week. Thankfully, Ryan Ludwick had a monster night at the plate. With Albert out (we have to assume he'll miss SOME time), look for a platoon of Joe Mather and Chris Duncan at first base. G.M. John Mozeliak said Duncan wa... I returned from vacation late Sunday night pleased by two developments: First, the Cardinals continue to win despite more injuries to an already compromised starting pitching staff. Still no word on Adam Wainwright's finger as of 6:30 pm Monday night. Should we be fearing the worst? Let's not think about how devastating that would be. The fact that the Cards are 11 games above .500 once again demonstrates Tony LaRussa's ability to cont... |
