The Night In Sports - 5/28

8:00 PM Wed, May 28, 2008 |

Ryan Ludwick back in the lineup tonight so the La Russa bashers can take a night off. I'm always amused at how angry Cards fans get at Tony even though they know his history. Tony is always going to play percentages and left handed hitters are hitting 75 points higher than righties versus Astros right hander Shawn Chacon. Plus, La Russa plays his entire roster and history suggests it pays off when role players are ready to contribute in Sept...

Most Underrated?

3:34 PM Tue, May 27, 2008 |

Pete Prisco of Sportsline.com has formulated an interesting list, naming the most overrated and most underrated players in the NFL. His most underrated player is Rams safety O.J. Atogwe and his most overrated is New Orleans Saint Reggie Bush.

Can't argue with the Bush pick. The injury to workhorse running back Deuce McAllister last season exposed Bush as a specialty-type player. He was totally incapable of carrying the load as a true ...

The Night in Sports - 5/20

9:21 PM Tue, May 20, 2008 |

This will be a quick one tonight. Following up my earlier blog about the Rams, Mike Silver is a respected writer. If he goes with a story then he obviously believes it has plenty of legs. But I need more than a few quotes from Eddie DeBartolo to believe the Rams are on the way out of town. I have good reason to believe that Chip Rosenbloom will try to steer the Rams to a buyer or buyers that would keep the team in St. Louis just as Bill Laurie...

Rams For Sale?

11:49 AM Tue, May 20, 2008 |

Mike Silver of Yahoo has some tongues wagging with his article saying the Rams are for sale and that former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo is an interested party. The story isn't a fabrication but it also doesn't really break any new ground.

First, it needs to be pointed out that Mike Silver has always had an "in" with the Rams dating back to his days with Sports Illustrated. And he's as close to Marshall Faulk as anyone in the print bus...

The Night in Sports - 5/19

9:22 PM Mon, May 19, 2008 |

Jim Edmonds paying dividends for the Cubs with a strong catch against the Astros. That's where Edmonds can help the Cubs--playing defense. He's shown very little offensively the past two seasons but for the price the Cubs are paying he could be a major asset on defense.

Two years ago, Jon Lester was diagnosed with a form of cancer that affects the lymph system. Tonight he tosses a no-hitter. What makes it so unlikely is the fact that h...

The Night In Sports - 5/15

8:39 PM Thu, May 15, 2008 |

No one's ducking the Jason Isringhausen problem at Busch Stadium. Tony Larussa calls his performance "problem one" and Izzy to his credit never ducks responsibility. He's always been a stand up guy which is I way hope he finds his way back to respectability. It may be time to put Izzy on the D-L so he can shut it down for a couple weeks and regroup. The Cards have blown too many late inning leads already.

The Astros won again today--t...

Rams Camp Schedule

7:54 PM Tue, May 13, 2008 |

If you'd like to watch the Rams workouts in training camp, it may be easier to travel to Nashville than Wisconsin. The Rams will be on the move in camp racking up frequent flyer miles.

The Rams will likely report to Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin on or about July 25. The team will have to charter a plane from St. Louis to Milwaukee to get the players in camp. (Mequon is about 15 minutes north of Milwaukee). They'll train the...

The Night In Sports - 5/12

8:49 PM Mon, May 12, 2008 |

Even staff aces get lit up and tonight it's Adam Wainwright's turn. It's 8-1 in the 6th as I write. Here's a suggestion--stop pitching to Brewers star Ryan Braun. He's hit two home runs tonight and four in the last two days. Enough.

Yadier Molina in the second spot tonight? Cards fans always have something to debate with Tony in charge. It was a short night for Molina. He got the boot in the fifth inning for arguing a ball/strike call...

Mini-Camp Wrap

2:33 PM Sun, May 11, 2008 |

I spent part of two days at Rams Park this weekend and came away encouraged (not gulping the Kool-Aid but encouraged). Among my observations:

--The offensive emphasis is obviously on playing faster. Al Saunders is flying around challenging every wide receiver on every play. I know Marc Bulger and Tory Holt as well as I know anyone in a Rams uniform and spoke with both this weekend. They're both very happy Saunders is here. Torry told m...

The Night In Sports - 5/8

8:41 PM Thu, May 08, 2008 |

Kyle Lohse hit hard in his second straight start today. The good news is the light hitting Pirates will be in town next week. That may give him a chance to get back on track. The Pirates are hitting .254 as a team (the Cardinals are hitting .281). The bright spot today: two more home runs for Ryan Ludwick. Don't know how you take him out of the line up right now. He's leading the team in home runs and batting average.

Cant get enough o...

Lohse Lit Up Again

3:46 PM Thu, May 08, 2008 |

Kyle Lohse's defense deserted him again. A Brendan Ryan error cost him in the first inning. Well, it was an error until the scorer changed it to a hit later. (It's almost impossible to be charged with an error these days---don't get Doug Vaughn started on that subject). So, Lohse was charged with seven runs in four innings at Coors Field today.

After a great start, Lohse has been battered in his last two starts, surrendering 15 earned ...

Ankiel...ridiculous

10:38 PM Tue, May 06, 2008 |

I said it when spring training opened and repeat it now after watching Rick Ankiel dazzle in Colorado--Colby Rasmus can take his time at Triple A. The Cardinals have their center fielder of the future.

Ankiel's two throws tonight were ridiculously good. Not just strong but perfectly accurate too. Ankiel may never make as many spectacular catches as Jim Edmonds but he'll throw out more runners. And Edmonds had an excellent arm. Ankiel ...

More Mulder

9:07 PM Mon, May 05, 2008 |

An update on Mulder at 9:08pm. Scratch that optimism about Mulder settling down after the second inning. He goes six innings and gives up seven runs on nine hits. His ERA with Memphis is 13.03. The good news is 61 of Mulder's 90 pitches were strikes.

...

Mulder Struggles Again

8:07 PM Mon, May 05, 2008 |

Sitting here watching the Cards-Rocks game at about 8 pm when producer Tim Klutsarits tells me Mark Mulder is getting rocked again. He was checking out the triple A scores on the ticker.

Mulder, pitching another rehab assignment for Memphis, gave up five runs in the first two innings to Colorado Springs. Not encouraging to see Mulder struggle yet again. So, he's still a ways away apparently. I was told by someone who spent extensive t...
