The Heisman Chase

5:43 PM Wed, Nov 28, 2007 |

Three days before the Mizzou--Oklahoma showdown, I believe Tim Tebow has already won the Heisman. And, I'm not sure I wouldn't vote Tebow over Chase Daniel. But, if I had a vote, I'd be watching Saturday's game very closely. If Daniel plays back to back mistake free games against two top ten teams and leads Mizzou to the national championship game, I might switch my vote to Daniel.

But the Heisman voting is and always has been flawed....

Beautiful and Atrocious

4:30 PM Sun, Nov 25, 2007 |

The first adjective describes Mizzou's offense. The second describes the Rams offense. Let's get the ugly part out of the way first. The Rams offense is abysmal--injuries or not. All season long, they've been unable to score in the red zone and unable to run the ball inside the five yard line. A second quarter first and goal at the one yard line becomes a field goal. And then there's the mess at the end of the game. In their final nine drives,...

Why Mizzou Wins

5:34 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007 |

Before I get blasted with email from Jayhawk alums, I think Kansas has earned its lofty status. It's the best team story in college football this season. But, I think Mizzou is capable of ending the run. I'm not being a homer here--I genuinely believe Mizzou has the edge.

Missouri has played a tougher schedule without question. Kansas' non-conference schedule was super soft. But Mizzou opened with Illinois, now a legit top 20 team, an...

Ugly Counts

4:36 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007 |

How ugly was the Rams win at San Fran? Let me count the ways. Actually, all you need to know are the third quarter stats. In 15 minutes of play, the Rams and Niners COMBINED for 24 yards of total offense and one first down. The Niners ran 11 plays and managed nine yards. Please don't make me do the math on that one.

But, ugly as it was, it still represents progress. An ugly win is better than a pretty loss. The Rams would have killed ...

Flaxseed Oil?

6:29 PM Thu, Nov 15, 2007 |

Can you be indicted for insulting the intelligence of a grand jury? My dog ate my homework is more plausible than Barry Bonds' 2003 testimony saying he thought his trainer was giving him flaxseed oil. A viewer called and wanted to know why Bonds is being indicted and others aren't. Simple---Bonds is the one who lied under oath, according to the evidence. Of course, he'll have a chance to prove his innocence.

I do agree with the caller...

Yankees Going Crazy..Again

8:31 PM Tue, Nov 13, 2007 |

Salary cap in baseball? Yeah, right. Once again, the Yankees are making a mockery of the "soft" cap Bud Selig championed a few years ago. As the free agency period opens, the Boss's team is backing up the Brinks truck for two of their own. 36 year old catcher Jorge Posada is close to signing a deal for four years and 52 million. And reliever Mariano Rivera, 39, is on the verge of signing a three year, 45 million dollar deal. Nice. 97 million ...

The Jax Factor

8:50 PM Sun, Nov 11, 2007 |

Steven Jackson wasn't the most spectacular player on the field today but don't underestimate his impact. At least three different assistant coaches emphasized how his prescence opens things up for the passing game. And one defensive assistant says the DEFENSE plays better when Jackson is in uniform. That's a confidence issue. It's no coincidence that the Rams have played their best football with Jackson on the field, both today and in the firs...

Rolen-Larussa Controversy

8:43 PM Thu, Nov 08, 2007 |

Okay, I don't get it. Scott Rolen is exactly the kind of old-school, hard working, put your head down and run the bases quietly after a home run kind of guy that should bond with a guy like Tony Larussa. They both seemingly approach the game the same way--with great respect for it. So why can't they get along? Is the rift really that deep? Hard to believe.

I hope Rolen is back because a healthy Scott Rolen is a difference maker. And, i...

An Entertaining Sunday

4:58 PM Sun, Nov 04, 2007 |

I have a rare Sunday off (from play by play) so I'm watching as much football as I can here at the station. As I'm writing this, the Colts-Pats game is 13-7 Indy in the third. It's close but so far not as riveting as expected. Peyton Manning just threw a bad interception. He is human after all. There were plenty of noteable performances today:

--Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson has wrapped up the rookie of the year award. He slic...

Mo and Me

9:03 PM Thu, Nov 01, 2007 |

Item one---I like the hire of John Mozeliak. If you're committed to Tony Larussa then why not hire someone he's comfortable with. And, who on the short list had more to offer than Mo? I have to tell you, I was impressed by how forceful and confident he was at the press conference and in my one on one interview which you can see on Sports Sunday. The guy genuinely believes he'll be successful. First piece of advice---stop suddenly overpaying f...
