September 2007 ArchivesO for September..as in the Rams go winless in the opening month. Simply put, the first quarter of the season has been a disaster. Injuries and losses are piling up at a disturbing rate. The Rams offense hasn't scored a touchdown in 171 minutes. They haven't crossed a goal line in 31 possessions. At Dallas, the defense gave up 502 yards and 35 points and it could have been much worse if Wade Phillips hadn't called off the dogs. Yes, injuries a... Today marks the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the 1987 NFL players strike. It was an emotionally charged month and I was caught in the middle of it. About a month earlier, I had suffered a fairly serious neck injury in my second training camp with the Dallas Cowboys. I had been placed on injured reserve and was undergoing two lengthy therapy sessions daily. The night before the "replacement players" were to going to show up at ... ***The Cardinals' ninth inning comeback Sunday night is precisely why I hope Tony LaRussa comes back next season. He gets the most out of each of his teams. That was certainly the case last season. And, this club had every reason to pack it in at mid season and didn't. It was overmatched due to injury but it didn't quit. ***Interesting that LaRussa has speculated that he might have alienated a player or two by pushing his team to comp... The above is a decades old football axiom. What you think you see with the naked eye isn't always what the film(video in the 21st century) confirms. Jim Hanifan reminded fans of that tonight on our Rams Rush Hour radio show on My 103.3. The Rams' makeshift offensive line is being pounded by fans and media for the pounding Marc Bulger took Sunday. But Hanny watched the offensive game tape today(as he did hundreds of times as a coach) and says t... An excruciating loss. No other way to describe it. On a day when the Rams play well enough to overcome multiple injuries and suspensions, they still lose. On a day when they dominate the 49ers statistically, they still lose. And now they've dug themselves quite a hole. They'e 0-2 overall, 0-2 at home, 0-2 in the conference and 0-1 in the NFC West. Other than that.... A look at the stats tell you the Rams should have won by a touchdown ... NFL officiaiting is on the decline. It's borderline incompetent with regard to two calls specifically---pass interference and roughing the passer. The latest blown call occurred last night at the end of the Ravens--Bengals game. The pass interference call on Todd Heap that nullified the Ravens' touchdown was ridiculous. Then, the Bengals get hit with a bogus "make up" call that kept the Ravens in it. The Bengals held on and won. If I was Balti... Lifeless. No other way to describe the second half by the Rams. The hot issue on talk radio this week will be the vanilla pre-season. But, Scott Linehan was vanilla and conservative last year and the Rams opened with a great effort in week one. Besides, 90 percent of NFL teams treat pre- season the way the Rams did. I'll be more analytical in my approach to this loss. After an impressive 15 play opening drive for a touchdown, the offe... I can't remember a guy tearing up the league the way Rick Ankiel has in his first 23 games. It's not fair to place the same kind of expectations on him he once carried as a pitcher. But, why shouldn't Cards fans think the guy will be a 35 to 40 homer, 100 rbi guy for years to come? Through 23 games, he's hit 9 homers and driven home 29 runs. And he's hitting .358. His numbers through 23 games project to 63 homers, 203 rbi's and 203 hits over ... ***The Rams will be facing a strong front seven this week. The Panthers' line and linebackers are big, physical and athletic. Carolina was in the top ten in most defensive categories a year ago. I'd love to see the Rams get Tight End Randy McMichael involved early. His prescence should open things up for the Rams wide receivers. There's no reason he shouldn't catch 40 or 50 passes this season. ***Don't be alarmed if Panthers Wide Rec... Kudos to Frank Viverito and everyone at the Sports Commission who worked hard to bring back the Mizzou-Illinois rivalry. You couldn't have asked for a more entertaining game to open the college football season. And, the atmosphere at the Dome was incredible. I know some Mizzou fans are discouraged because the game was so close but I think there are a few reasons for that: |
