Field Notes 2/27

ADAM TIMMERMAN GAVE THE RAMS EIGHT GOOD YEARS, ON AND OFF THE FIELD. He and wife Jana dove head first into the community. They'll be missed by a lot of people in these parts including Jim Hanifan, Adam's former offensive line coach. In fact, it was Hanny that persuaded Adam to sign here as a free agent before the 1999 season. He was coming off back to back Super Bowl appearances with the Packers and had more than a couple teams pursuing him. W...

HERE'S A QUESTION I GET FREQUENTLY: WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE ATHLETES AND/OR COACHES TO INTERVIEW? I've done my best to whittle a long list of candidates down to a top ten. I'll limit my choices to guys I deal with here in St. Louis rather than nationally. Because of that, a guy like Terry Bradshaw isn't on this list but would make it otherwise. Few people make me laugh louder or harder than Bradshaw during an interview. Conrad Dobler is another...

I EXPECTED TONY LARUSSA TO HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY FOLLOWING DAVE DUNCAN'S DECLARATION REGARDING HIS FIVE STARTERS. Duncan shocked me by naming his rotation on the first day of camp. It's great to have confidence in guys but it seemed premature. Larussa has since said it's an open competition. Obviously, Chris Carpenter is locked in and Kip Wells seems a sure bet. Beyond that, Anthony Reyes is the most likely starter. I'm curious to see how Ada...

KURT WARNER CONTINUES TO DO CHARITY WORK IN THE AREA EVEN THOUGH IT'S BEEN THREE YEARS SINCE HE WORE A RAMS UNIFORM. He and Brenda co-chaired the St. Patrick's Center trivia contest at Scottrade. One day when I look back at my career in sportscasting, I'll remember very fondly the days when Warner was directing the Rams offense. It's been a difficult transition for him accepting his role as a back up. He is an extremely competitive guy. With ...

THE RAMS LOST A KEY MEMBER OF THE ORGANIZATION FROM THE L.A. DAYS WHEN DON HEWITT PASSED AWAY THURSDAY. Don, like his son Todd is now, was the players' best buddy. The equipment manager is the lifeblood of any professional locker room. Don was not only liked, he was respected. Jack Snow was extemely fond of Don and vice versa. Don served the organization from 1967 to 1994. He turned the job over to his son Todd when the Rams moved here. But, h...

KUDOS TO BERNIE MIKLASZ FOR HELPING ROGER WEHRLI GAIN LONG OVERDUE INDUCTION TO THE HALL OF FAME. Jack Buck helped Dan Dierdorf and clearly Bernie's lobbying helped Roger. The most compelling part of Bernie's presentation had to be the testimonials by Hall of Famers Roger Staubach and Sonny Jurgensen. Staubach calling Wehrli the best corner he ever faced had to register with the voters. Also, both quarterbacks confirmed that they stopped throw...
