Jefferson City: Missouri moves to expand sex offender list

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri Senate has voted to require sex offenders convicted before 1995 to register with the state.

The state Supreme Court has ruled that the registry law does not apply to those people because the law took effect in 1995 and the state Constitution prohibits laws from being applied retrospectively.

House Springs: Suspect charged in shooting, hostage situation

HOUSE SPRINGS, Mo. (AP) -- A St. Louis-area man faces charges of assault, unlawful use of a weapon and felonious restraint after allegedly holding four people hostage and shooting one of them.

It happened Monday morning in House Springs. Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer says 36-year-old William Weitzel became upset because his former girlfriend was with another man.

St. Louis: Inmate found hanged

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Suicide is suspected after an inmate of the St. Louis city jail is found hanged.
A corrections officer found the 29-year-old victim Monday night. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released any additional details, including why the man was jailed.

Festus: Combination left on lock leads to theft

Authorities in Jefferson County, Missouri are investigating the theft dirt bike from a locked shed. According to police the owner forgot to take the sticker off of the back of the padlock that listed the combination. The incident happened last week along Highway 61. The 2005 Yamoto dirtbike was placed in the locked shed last Tuesday and was gone the following afternoon.

Pike County: Man suspected in deadly house fire arrested at Mexican border

BOWLING GREEN, Mo. (AP) -- A Missouri man on the run after a fire killed a housemate was "yards away" from crossing into Mexico when border patrol agents captured him, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said Monday.

The fire on Thursday in the northeast Missouri town of Gazette killed 56-year-old Larry Moore. Authorities say the fire began in the room where Moore's charred body was found. Arson is suspected.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities believe the motive for the killing of an 80-year-old East St. Louis man was robbery.

Police Chief Lenzie Stewart says officers who were called by neighbors to the home of Spencer Brewer on Sunday morning found him dead and covered with debris.

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) -- Former Missouri Rep. Brad Robinson has been sentenced to five years probation for leaving the scene of an accident after hitting a pedestrian on New Year's Day 2008.

Investigators in Jefferson County are looking for suspects after three classic cars were stolen on a lot on Gravois Road in High Ridge.

Police say someone cut and rolled back the fence to the lot, then broke into a trailer to get the keys to three cars that were awaiting transport to their owners.
