East St. Louis: Double shooting

Police responded to a shooting at 1010 Sycamore in East St. Louis just before 2 am. Upon arrival they discovered a 3- year-old boy shot in the hand and a 48-year-old man shot in the back. The adult victim told police he was in his home when an intruder kicked opened his door and began firing. At this time police have no suspects. Both victims are expected to recover.

BROOKLYN, Ill. (AP) -- A shootout in the parking lot of a southern Illinois strip club has left one man wounded and five in jail.
Brooklyn police Chief Delbert Marion says the shooting happened early Saturday outside the Bottoms Up Nightclub.
One man was shot and wounded and was transported to an area hospital. Police have not released his condition.
Five people were jailed after the incident, but the shooter who wounded the man was not among them. He is said to have fled the scene, and officers are searching for him.
No other information was immediately available.

The victim was sleeping in his residence when he heard someone enter the garage. The
victim went to investigate and saw a burglar in the garage. The victim then fired shots at
the suspect, striking him in the chest. The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he
was listed in critical/unstable condition. The victim's gun was registered and he had all
the proper permits. The investigation is ongoing.

St. Louis City police are investigating two overnight carjackings. The first occurred in the 4100 block of Kossuth just before 2 am. A female victim had just parked her car in front of a residence when she notice a burgundy colored vehicle drive by her and then turnaround. The vehicle parked across the street from her and two black males got out of the car and stole her personal belongings and her 2007 Kia Optima at gun point. The second incident occurred in the 4000 block of Oregon at 2:20 am. In this incident two hispanic teens were sitting in a gray, 2005 Chevy pickup when three black males approached, pointed guns at victims and ordered them out of the truck. The suspects then got in the vehicle and fled. No one was hurt in either incident.

St. Louis, Mo: Man sentenced for embezzling money

St. Louis, MO: Harry Keil was sentenced to 27 months in prison on federal charges of embezzling money from a union pension and welfare plans, which he served as the plan manager, Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap announced today.

]]> Keil was hired in August 2006 by the Trustees of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 9 as the Administrative Manager of the Pension and Health and Welfare Funds. The Plans' offices are located on St. Charles Rock Road, Bridgeton, MO. According to documents filed with the court, Keil caused a series of payments to be made from the Pension Plan and the Health and Welfare Plan based on false invoices which he created. In some instances, he supported the illegal payments with invoices which bore the names of entities which did legitimate business with the Plans and, as result the false invoices appeared to be valid. Some of the payments were made to his personal bank accounts and loans. Keil admitted with his plea that between August 2006 and August 31, 2008, he embezzled $341,000 from the Plans. Daniel R. Petrole, Acting Inspector General, United States Department of Labor, stated: "Theft of union-sponsored pension, health and welfare fund assets jeopardizes the retirement security and health benefits of its members. This indictment reaffirms my agency's commitment to investigate this type of crime. We will continue to work cooperatively with the Department of Justice and the Employee Benefits Security Administration to protect the pensions and health and welfare benefits of union members." Harry Keil, 51, St. Charles, MO, pleaded guilty in May to one felony count of embezzlement from an employee benefit plan and one felony count of mail fraud. He appeared this morning for sentencing before United States District Judge Jean C. Hamilton, who also ordered that Keil pay $341,000 in restitution to the District 9 funds.
Reap commended the work on the case by the Department of Labor, Office of Racketeering and Fraud Investigations, the Employee Benefits Security Administration; and Assistant United States Attorneys James E. Crowe, Jr., Charles Birmingham and Julie Wright who handled the case for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Moberly, Mo: Man sentenced on federal child pornography charges

St. Louis, MO: Francis L. Berrey was sentenced to 180 months in prison, followed by
supervised release for life, on federal charges of production and possession of child
pornography, Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap and Randolph County Sheriff Mark Nichols announced today.

]]> According to court documents, between January 2007 and November 2008, Berrey
videotaped a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Berrey, 35, Moberly, MO, plead guilty last August to one felony count of production of child pornography and one felony count of possession of child pornography. He appeared today for sentencing before United States District Judge Rodney W. Sippel, in St. Louis. "Mr. Berrey went beyond possessing child porn," said Roland Corvington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in St. Louis. "He betrayed and robbed a child's innocence by videotaping the victim."

He was taken to an area hospital where he was listed in critical/unstable condition and taken into surgery. The victim later died at the hospital. Two suspects, both black males, have been identified and investigators are attempting to locate them. The investigation is ongoing.
