Metro East: 1,900 motorists cited in state police crack down

Illinois State Police news release

On January 24, 2009, the Illinois State Police began focused enforcement efforts on the Martin Luther King and McKinley bridges in response to a joint effort by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police to reduce crashes on those bridges.

The following is the Year to Date totals for both the McKinley and Martin
Luther King Bridges:

total warnings 1,052
speed citations 1,298
speed warnings 470
seat belt citations 304
child restraint 25
DUI arrests 16
other alcohol 55
suspended drivers 98
uninsured drivers 156
criminal arrests 21
wanted on warrant 142
motorist assists 116

There was 1 crash (DUI /injury/ head on) on the MLK bridge on May 9

Captain Jerry Culp, District 11 Commander stated, "In an effort to keep
the public informed, statistics on these efforts will be released to the
media monthly, in hopes that the motoring public, through TV, radio and
newspaper, will utilize voluntary compliance for the safety of ALL those
that travel the bridges. The over NINETEEN HUNDRED motorists in violation
in the last 15 weeks can testify to our strict adherence to obeying the
laws and improving the safety of the motoring public on these structures."
