BENTON, Ill. (AP) -- A newly indicted southern Illinois sheriff accused of selling pot, often while in uniform, is keeping his job even as he remains jailed on federal drug and weapons charges. Gallatin County Sheriff Raymond Martin has been in custody without bond since his arrest last month. Federal grand jurors indicted him yesterday on three counts of marijuana distribution and two counts of carrying a firearm -- his service weapon -- while trafficking drugs. Martin's job isn't up for election until next year. County Board Chairman Randy Drone says Martin will remain sheriff and collect his $40,000-a-year salary. One of Martin's deputies has been promoted to interim sheriff. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) 7 CommentsLeave a comment |

I cannot believe this crook can still keep his job and draw his pay after doing this crime, How can the people let this happen I say fire him now.
Well, I guess he'll have money for the canteen!
I find it hard to believe that a public elected official, especially one sworn to uphold the law is being allowed to keep his job and pay. I think the job should be terminated and the interim sheriff be paid the sheriff's salary until such time a new sheriff can be elected.
This puts a bad impression on the law enforcement community.
