The victim advised while she was getting gas she noticed a male subject drive into the gas station in a black Chevrolet Impala. The suspect entered the gas station and came outside. The victim left the gas station and travelled east on Illinois Route #143 with her three small children in the rear of the vehicle. T

The victim saw the male subject travelling in the same direction behind her vehicle. The victim felt uneasy about the situation and turned into a subdivision. The victim travelled down a cul-de-sac. The victim stopped her vehicle in the 100 block of Emerald Hills, Edwardsville, Illinois.

The male subject pulled along side her vehicle and asked the victim for directions to the interstate. The victim indicated that she knew something was suspicious because the subject had just left the area of the interstate. The subject, Carleous Clay Jr., asked the victim for something to write on. The subject then showed a black handgun and told the victim not to move or he would shoot. The victim fled in her vehicle driving across a vacant lot. The victim fled the area and called 911. The Sheriff's Office received the call.

During the 911 call the on duty supervisor Lt. Gary Burns directed 911 telecommunicator Tim Fulcher to have the victim drive toward the Sheriff's Office. While the victim was on the phone with the Sheriff's Office she indicated the suspect was continuing to follow her. The suspect was running red lights to keep pace with the victim. The victim was directed to the parking lot of the Sheriff's Office. Deputies were dispatched to the area in an attempt to intercept the suspect and his vehicle from the victim.

When the victim arrived at the Sheriff's Office, Lt. Burns met her in the parking lot. When the suspect saw where the victim had drove to, he turned around in a bank parking lot across the street from the Sheriff's Office and fled the area. The victim and her children were taken inside the Sheriff's Office for safety.

A deputy responding to the call saw the suspect vehicle travelling east on Rt. #143 near Kiowa Street, Edwardsville, Illinois. The deputy turned around and stopped the suspect vehicle on Rt. #143 at Pin Oak Road, Edwardsville, Illinois on the lot of the Madison County Highway Garage.

Clay was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle was done but the gun was not located. Deputy Scott Gurley was the deputy who stopped Clay. Deputy Gurley is a K-9 Officer. Deputy Gurley used his K-9 to search the area near Kiowa Street and was able to locate the gun that Clay used during this incident. The gun looks like a real firearm but it is a .24 caliber air soft pistol. Clay threw the gun out of the car window when he saw Deputy Gurley's marked police car.

Clay was taken to the Madison County Sheriff's Office where he was held in the Madison County Jail pending formal charges. The vehicle Clay was driving was reported stolen on June 15, 2009 to authorities in Ottawa County Michigan. Clay was also wanted for a parole violation warrant from the State of Michigan. Clay has been to prison for robbery charges.

The warrant and criminal information was signed against Clay by the Honorable Judge Charles Romani. Bond was set at $100,000.00.
