Washington Park: Assistant to mayor pleads guilty

2:40 PM Thu, May 21, 2009 |

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- A former assistant to the mayor of Washington Park faces up to 13 years in federal prison after she pleaded guilty to evading income taxes and misapplying village property.
Fifty-four-year-old Linda Connor of Belleville entered the pleas Thursday in federal court in East St. Louis.
Connor admits that -- as Mayor John Thornton's aide from April 2005 through 2007 -- she embezzled and intentionally misapplied property valued at more than $300,000. That loss caused employees' pension funds to be underfunded.
She also understated her 2006 federal taxable income by about $190,000.
Last March, former Thornton aide Dorothy Triplett was sentenced to 18 months in prison for misapplying property and embezzling nearly $144,000 from the southwestern Illinois village in 2006 and 2007.
Connor's sentencing is set for Aug. 28.
