HAIR & TRANSITION

HAIR & TRANSITION

By now, you know that I have changed my hair. I decided to go ... natural.

My wife, Janet, says the one thing alway constant with her ... is that she will change her hair.

Women do it all the time, but when a man changes his hair ... well, it creates more of a reaction ... especially in my job.

In the television business, you try to maintain a consistent visual image. We record and photograph hundreds of promotion shots for broadcast, print, internet and other sources. Once you start changing ... that means EVERYTHING becomes obsolete. So, for years, I've fought a losing battle to keep my image at least somewhat constant.

Now, I'm at a stage in my life where I just want to change.

Would I prefer to have long, thick, flowing hair? Maybe, but I don't know if that would be me.

Would I prefer a shaved head? Again, I'm not sure that works for me.

So, I have come to this current look ... and I already like it ... especially ... the freedom it gives me.

In times past, my wife has told me when she cut her hair really short that she felt suddenly free. I didn't understand what she meant ... until now.

Now, I have no more worries about getting every strand in place ... much less keeping every strand in my head. No more worries about trying to make it appear that I have more hair than I do.

When I went into the Marines ... I had a full head of hair and felt pretty cool. The first thing the Marines did was ... shave it.

I stood in line watching other recruits ahead of me. They were ordered into the chair and then barbers armed with electric razors zipped back and forth so fast that in just a blur the recruits looked like frightened hairless creatures with hair piled ankle high around their chairs. When it was my turn, I considered making some smart alec remark, but sanity prevailed and I kept my mouth shut and with 3 zips ... my head looked like a pale pool ball.

During the Marines, I thought ... when I get out ... I'll grow my hair back and wear it the way I want ... forever. That was my plan, but genetics came into play. Then, like many men came the years of denial, fighting back a losing battle ... and ... well, I've come to this place in life.

Will I make another change? Go for a spiked look? Mohawk?

As we say in television ... stay tuned ... and let me know your thoughts about men and hair.

Larry,

I have watched news 4 since I can remember. Between you and Juluis your hair was always one thing I could rely on staying the same. :) When I first saw the new look I was like OMG what did Larry do! Please put back on your hair or go buy something. But after reading your blog I feel for you about men and thier hair pressure. I really like the old style but I guess I can still count on Kent's hair being the same. :)

P.S. -I'll still stay tuned in to 4, because I love your news and not your hair. lol

Larry, you certainly got a reaction from me tonight! You're right, I never thought about it before, but a man changing his hair can be quite surprising.

I was a little concerned too that something might be wrong, so I'm glad you said something.

That said, you're still Larry, the guy I trust to get my news from, and maybe it's time for me to make a hair change too... :)

April said:

I absolutely love it. Natural is best. As long as your wife loves it, that's the only person you gotta impress :) You look very refined!

Larry, when I saw you on the news tonight, I recalled that my Dad had a comb-over for years and my Mom kept bugging him to cut it off. One day, he came home after visiting the barber and the comb-over was gone. Not only was my Mom happy, but my Dad wondered why it had taken him so long, because he loved not having to comb those strands across the top of his head. It's a good look and much easier to manage.
Hope the shoulder surgery was successful.

LizaBeth Cama said:

I hope you recover soon thanks for Standing for the up to be bald.

Larry, we live in an age when looks and image is so important. Society with the help of the media, takes it to extremes. I think you did a very brave thing... enjoy your new freedom! Your still the same Larry Conner, the best news anchor in St. Louis! However, Vickie Newton is still better looking one! LOL Hope your arm gets better!

Denise said:

Larry,

You look great! I wish more men would do this.
I see guys all the time who try to make it like
they have more hair than they do and it just makes them look pittiful. And keep in mind even though you're happily married,it's still nice to know that a lot of women find this look to be the sexiest. Enjoy your change!

barb mott said:

You look great. You could wear a mohawk (yuk)or dred (yukkier) locks and it wouldn't make a difference because you still are great news caster, reporter. We watch you and the rest of the crew because you are good. Oh, tell Vickie not to go bald, though. That could change things.

Nancy Kammeier said:

Larry,I applaued you!! It looks great. It is hard to make a change especially with the hair..I wish I could get the nerve to just let mine go grey. I love the new look. What's up with the arm?

R. Biermann said:

Hey Larry, you look great. My husband wanted to know if I cut your hair. He hated going to barber shop and spending all that money for five minutes in the chair, went out bought a clippers and said here ya go babe, the job is yours. Maybe your wife can start cutting yours, nothing to it.
Welcome back and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Mrs. P. said:

I really did a double take when I saw you on the news tonight! Love the new look Larry, glad you went natural!!

Laura said:

Mr. Conners,
Thank you for being the real you. You have been in my living room every night for several years now and I can say that I really never noticed your hair. I have noticed, however, that you are a great anchor.

Larry, you look good. You have alot of guts for your age and being on TV. At least we don't have to look at a comb-over and laugh about it.
Don't worry about that rotater cup you be good as new before you know it. At least you have somebody in wardrobe to help you get dressed if you need it and your wife at home. Soooooo God speed on your healing process.

Barbara said:

Larry, What happened to your arm?

Rich Engelke said:

Tex, I think your new look is the best since the "Chicken Ranch". I think it makes you look even more "trustworthy", still St. Louis' Cronkite. Natural is best! Rich

Pam Boyher said:

In todays society we try to conform to fit in and when we don't we are uncomfortable. God's plan for how you look is much better than what society tries to inflict on us. Don't worry about what other people think, be the man God intended.

Jim said:

Rotator cuff surgery, that's why you cut your hair, you wouldn't be able to comb it until your shoulder heals. Your doctor said it wouldn't affect your golf game though, sounds like when my dad played golf, he could always hit the woods, but he could never keep it on the fairway.
A marine? too bad.

To me the hair issue is a non issue, because you are still and that's all that matters. Keep up the good work ,Larry.

You are a very attractive man. I have always thought bald was sexy so now you're just sexier! Doesn't it feel good to just be you-not having to worry about what others think? BUT-what happened to your arm? Did your wife have to twist it to get you to go Au Naturale??

Rod R said:

Larry: Stick with the new look.

FYI for those who might have missed it, on
the 10 PM news Larry said he had rotater cuff
surgery, thus the arm sling.

Sylvia Siebert said:

Larry it really looks good, you wear it well. My husbands friends talked him into shaving his head when we were on a camping trip. I was like NO WAY, well our friend shaved it for him and they were laughing at me because I wouldn't dare look! But, once I did I was like well ok I guess it looks ok, but, now........hey I can't see him any other way! Now I tell him, honey you need to shave your head, your hairs getting to long. Which he is partially bald anyway. But, thats ok, I like to rub his head.......hahaha!! It's sexy! SO YOU GO LARRY!!!!!!!!!

HAVING EXPERIENCED THE "NAVY" HAIRCUT 50 YEARS AGO, AND THE GENETIC LOSS AS YOU HAD, I WORE AN EXPENSIVE HAIRPIECE FOR 35 YEARS. IN 2002, PITCHED THE PIECE AND WENT FOR THE "ALMOST SHAVED" LOOK.

RECEIVED MANY KISSES ON THE PATE FROM THE YOUNGER FEMALE SET, (WITH WIFE'S INDULGENCE), HAVE ENJOYED NOT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT THE LOOK OF THE HAIR. (WIFE BUZZES HEAD ABOUT ONCE A WEEK).

SHOULD HAVE DONE IT YEARS SOONER!!

CONGRATULATIONS ON JOINING THE CLUB !!!

Hi Larry,

you look very handsome! I really like it! It is you! It even makes you look younger(smile). If you get any emails saying anything negative about your new look, just know that they are just HATERS!!!! LOL!!!

Laura P said:

You go Larry! Good for you! As a woman with thinning hair I struggle on a daily basis trying to make myself look half way good. I've tried the Hans systems but can't get myself to actually wear them, what a waste of money. I like the "new" you, but tell me what happened to your arm.......

Bree Ferrario said:

Larry, we love you no matter how you do your hair. Your sense of humor and your voice are your constant image. You never disappoint!

Peggy Casey said:

I have always thought that if I saw you walking down the street I would probably mistake you for my brother. When I saw you yesterday I had to laugh because now you could be twins. Your both still handsome.

i always thought you were a good looking man....your wife better watch out now and let's not try the mowhawk OK !

Mona S. said:

Larry, we missed, thought you were on extended vacation, but glad you are back. You look great. Keep up with all of your physical therapy and you will be able to do more than before your surgery, I can attest to that. I feel much better because I cried everytime I did my exercises, but it was worth the work as is everything else. Good luck, relax, we like who you really are.

Marvin D said:

I like your new "hair" style...you may be setting a trend for older men; excuse me make that mature men. I also had rotator cuff surgery many years ago. Doing fine. Good luck to you.

Jeff G. said:

Larry, you look fantastic. As a mid-40s bald guy myself, I've always felt comfortable with au-naturale. In your business (like you mentioned), there's an image to uphold, which is a shame since our culture gets too hung up on looks. What's the saying, "looks are only skin-deep?".

From one bald dude to another --- bravo!!

Ami said:

I have been watching you forever and I feel like I have grown up with you (I remember the last night you said "Coming up next...MASH"). You look awesome and I don't watch you for your hair. I watch because of the great job you do in reporting the news.

MPFrank said:

Larry - love the new look - what cha gonna do with the old rug ? Can I have it ?

Who cares if you have hair you still talk the same and report the news the same. Just have to get use to the new look but we do like it.

Larry, I love your new look......it is very becoming. In my opinion, it is you!
Glad to have you back, you've been missed!!

Mike said:

I have a full head of hair but last summer I had my wife cut it short (1/2"). After a couple of day to get use to it I will never let it grow out again. After a shower and a quick wipe with the towel my hair is done. No more combing.

Mike V. said:

Larry looks more rugged! This is his best look ever! As a bald man myself, this is the best way!
Remember grass doesn' grow on a busy street. You are a smart guy,Larry!

Semper Fi, I just hope the shoulder is ok when it's time to get those motorcycles out this spring.

Al Frank said:

Hi Larry,

Thumbs up on the new hairstyle. You know, that 'do would have served you well when we were standing on top of the Arch in a 25mph wind about 20 years ago. As for the shoulder, I figure you'll be back in the starting rotation by mid-season. If you find that you've lost zip on your fastball, switch to the knuckler.

Since I've moved to Phoenix, AZ, 1 year ago, I still get on the Internet, to tune into KMOV.com. Mainly to see what's going on, in my former home of 43 years.

ROCK ON BRO!!!!! You're GREAT at your profession!!!

Change is good for a person, even if it is only a hair style. I've been watching channel 4 for many, many years. You are the epitome of professionalism and the hair style doesn't change what's really important. It's good to see Kent, Vickie, Larry, and Steve together again!

june agers said:

Larry, You look great!!!!I wish more men would get rid of the comb over look.We had a priest one time that had a comb over and when the wind would blow he had to turn with it so his hair wouldn't fly off his head.Telly Savalis was one of my favorites.(I am telling my age) Hope your arm heals, will keep you in my prayers. Thanks for all your wonderful reporting.

John said:

For many people wearing hair that is not their own is not an option. In your case it was an option. I know several people that have had injuries or burns that have left terrible scarring on their head and a hair system changed their life. I personally do not think that bald is beautiful and I preferred your old look. I suggest you return to it.

Mikee C said:

Larry, you look great. Thanks for the courage and integrity to not sell out by trying to look like you're 30 in 50's body.

Janet said:

When I seen you the other evening, your arm in a sling, and you with no hair, I was and still am concerned. But then I thought at least your back. So I hope your shoulder heals well, and the hair... well something just have to get used to. I already was scared at the end of the year that I may not get channel 4 with the charter cable problem... I even went out and got a converter box... just to hook one tv to so I could get channel 4 news. But all is well that ends well. Your back... your hair is gone but that's ok. So now for your shoulder to get better. Least channel 4 news and you are on our tv's at 5, 6, & 10.

Mike said:

Just tell people what I do. I tell them I'm 2 inches taller than my hair.

Steve B said:

I made that switch a couple of years ago, and it's great. The only thing is you have to trim it MORE often now, or it gets looking shaggy really quickly!

Becky Russell said:

Larry, I have watched you for years. Love the new look. It takes a lot of guts to be yourself. You are a true "news man". I think maybe you will have started a new trend.Keep up the great work !

Well, bless your little heart! I love it!!!
I totally agree with Janet! Good move!
My dad was bald and that is normal to me. He always used to tell us, "Men either have hair or brains and good looks!"
I couldn't agree more!
I love the 'ooooo baby smooth' look.

your new look is great

what really matters is content and you come across as a humble, awesome guy. Not everyone has that, so you don't need hair.

Cindy T. said:

Larry just a note to tell you that I watch your newscast daily faithfully. However, I will admit that I thought that my TV was on the wrong channel when I saw your new look.

I think your new look is becoming to you. BALD is beautiful. hope your recovery with your arm is a speedy one.

Hey Larry, I love the new look. You have been my newsman for as long as I cared about the news. My daughter and I love you! I agree with your wife and I am glad you chose the new updated look. I hope your shoulder heals quickly, do whatever the doctors tell you to do and it will go well. Rehab is tough but it is so worth it! I have had three knee surgeries and lots of rehab. They work great! Thanks for doing such a great job. Eileen

It's about time. The good Lord only made a few perfect heads, the rest he put hair on. I have had this hair style for years.

Yvie said:

Larry: Like your wife Janet, I have gone through many changes with my hair, but mostly it was trying to keep it from falling out. I used to wish and dream that my hair would grow and fall down to my shoulders. Be careful what you wish for. It did not grow out, but it would fall out down to my shoulders. My brothers and I have my father's bald spots (I'm one of his daughters) and have just finally decided to remain natural and I keep it cut very low. When I want a different style, I go buy a wig. I don't have to spend hours in a salon and the money I used to spend on my hair, I spend on crafts. You look great. Thanks for being you.

Hi, Larry! I was so glad to find this blog because I've been wanting to e-mail you and tell you how GREAT you look! My husband asked me if I noticed anything different about you (and I have to be honest, I don't watch the news, but I've grown up in St. Louis and of course know who you are). Instantly I could tell it was your hair and I thought, "Why, that Larry looks so handsome - AND exhilarated!" I was just so happy that you finally made that big step... I'm sure it was a big one for you and you couldn't have done it more gracefully. Kudos to you!

Larry,
My name is Carrie. I have lived in the St. Louis area my "entire" life so far (25 years). My mother is a die hard channel 4 fan. So growing up you could only imagine how many times we watched you on t.v... So I think you look great buddy. You should see pictures how I have changed over the years... Ha its a much more drastic transistion. To start as a little blonde haired girl to a 6 foot 2" brunette. Ha well my mom is still a die hard fan of "her channel 4" so keep it up. Just don't change too much. Ha
