LA RUSSA REACTION

5:11 PM Fri, Nov 30, 2007 |

First, you will want to see the reaction to my previous blog on Tony La Russa and his DUI test.
We are posting all of the viewers' opinions .. even though the vast majority are negative to our coverage, my remarks and even me personally.

Still, if we are going to be fair ... we can not just show you good responses and ignore the others.
That should emphasize how concerned we are about being fair.
I've tried to respond directly to many of the viewers, but this might serve to reach even more .. faster.
I regret that anyone thought we were airing the La Russa video strictly as a ratings ploy ... or with malice. I've been around Tony numerous times and he always strikes me as a fine man .. but in this case, he made a mistake.
If you are high profile and make a mistake .. you get high profile coverage.
Most of those complaining did not respond to what they would think if the DUI test video featured Barry Bonds.
Many did question.. what if it featured Larry Conners?
My answer is very direct.
Channel 4 should air the video and treat it just as did with LaRussa. That would be the only fair thing to do .. despite any additional embarrassment it would cause my family or me.
If Channel 4 did not air the video.. that would be wrong, and I guarantee other stations would air it.
If they failed to do so .. they could rightly be accused of covering up for "one of their own".
The guiding ethical principle is very simple: We can NOT have different rules for our own backyard.
Now, a final note which you might find interesting. For those of you against our decision ... my wife did not like us airing the video of La Russa's DUI test.
Now, I'm not about to say ... that I'm smarter than my wife .. but I will say .. in this case ... she was wrong. There, I said it.

Okay. I understand what you are saying, but I think it would be wrong NO MATTER WHO it is (Barry Bonds, you, a random stranger, etc). When Paris Hilton or one of those "high profile" stars gets into trouble, we don't have to watch the video of them getting arrested. I do think it is necessary for the public to know it happened and even to know what his reaction and punishment is. However, there is no reason for the video to be shown. That is the only part of this I take issue with. It just seemed in poor taste. I still respect you and channel 4 and will continue to tune in, but I just feel that you all need to know that this choice, to air the arrest video, was in poor taste.

Airing the Tony LaRussa video was definitely overkill. The followup could have very easily been reported without the video. It seems that local television stations have succumbed more and more to tabloid journalism. If you are trying to be more like a local version of 'Entertainment Tonight' or other shows like it, you have succeeded. As for airing other people in the same situation, I think that is also the wrong thing to do. Reporting without sensationalism is a rare thing these days, but it would be refreshing to see.

Thank you for allowing me to comment.

I think it was wrong to air it. I think if you are going to air someones dirty laundry you ought to do the same for everyone. Don't just air ir because they are high profile. That is unfair. I have some folks I would like their dirty laundry aired but you skip over them and air Tony.

Larry
I first met you when you and Julius competed, and I must say you did well in St.Louis, rightly so.
As far as LaRussa, Iam one that thinks he has overstayed and created turmoil with the team, his personal opinions are reflected in his many unreported "spats" with his players.
His DUI SHOULD BE reported, and aired and I think it will show a deeper problem that Tony has in the up coming year.HE HAS NO RESPECT !!!!
