An Unusually Cool August

11:39 AM Tue, Aug 26, 2008 |

While the month still isn't over, this has been a very pleasant August so far! Typically the heat and humidity can be brutal this time of year but that has rarely been the case this month. The average high in St. Louis has been about 87 degrees and we've only had 4 days with temperatures above 90 degrees! Last August we had 26 days over 90 degrees, including 6 days in the triple digits! I'd venture to say that this is the greatest stretch o...

Enough With The Rain Already

3:49 PM Mon, May 26, 2008 |

The Memorial weekend for most was a bit of a washout. Unfortunately the forecast didn't play out as originally thought. But it didn't just rain, we had a deluge. I was caught out in it at one point and I think the raindrops were as big as my head. Well, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration.

So the airmass was super moist and we were in a situation where thunderstorms just kept developing and moving over the same areas over and o...

A New Record Set For St. Louis

3:36 PM Mon, May 12, 2008 |

So far this year, at least through May 11, St. Louis has received over 22 inches of rain! This is the most rainfall EVER recorded through this time period. Normally we would have about 13 inches. That puts us more than 9 inches above normal.

Here's the top 10 list:
1. 22.34" (2008)
2. 21.12" (1927)
3. 20.59" (1898)
4. 20.43" (1912)
5. 20.30" (1897)
6. 20.12" (1929)
7. 19.90" ...

Rivers Rising

4:41 PM Tue, Apr 01, 2008 |

With recent heavy rains we have several rivers again expecting flooding. Moderate flooding is expected on the Meramec at Eureka and Valley Park as well as on the Mississippi River at Chester. For details on the river levels as well as forecast crests check out this link:

With additional heavy rain expected Wednesday n...

More Rain In The Forecast

4:01 PM Tue, Mar 25, 2008 |

With rain expected on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we need to talk about flooding risks again.

A cold front passing through tonight will stall in the area by tomorrow morning. It will remain in the vicinity until Friday when it will finally slide southeast. In the meantime, plenty of moisture will overrun the front and a series of disturbances will move along it. This will lead to several rounds of showers and storms. At this ...

More On The Flooding

4:11 PM Tue, Mar 18, 2008 |

I wanted to include a link to the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service. You can go here to get the latest river stages and river level forecasts.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ahps2/index.php?wfo=lsx

As of this writing, several locations are looking at a forecast for moderate to major flooding.

On the Meramec River, moderate flooding is forecast at Steelville,...

Flooding Information

3:09 PM Mon, Mar 17, 2008 |

We've been talking about the flood watch but I wanted to share a few more details with you about what you can expect.

First, a few key terms. A Flood Watch refers generally to bodies of water. The water tends to rise and fall a bit slower than that of a Flash Flood. Those with interests along area rivers need to stay informed on the situation when a Flood Watch is in effect. Flash flooding on the other hand occurs as a result of ...

Wintry Weather Round 5

9:36 AM Thu, Feb 21, 2008 |

Round 5ish anyway, I've lost count. I hate that groundhog.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 6pm FRIDAY evening. There won't be precipitation the whole time, but several distinct rounds.

The northern reaches of the viewing area will lean more toward a snow event. The southern reaches will lean more toward freezing rain. The majority of our viewing area including the entire St. Louis Metro area will see slee...

Total Lunar Eclipse

3:35 PM Tue, Feb 19, 2008 |

A Total Lunar Eclipse will occur Wednesday night. This will be the last until 2010. It occurs only at Full Moon as the entire moon moves through the earth's shadow. You won't need any special viewing equipment, just look up. As of now I expect partly to mostly cloudy skies that night. Hopefully the clouds will hold off until after the eclipse. From start to finish the eclipse will last 3 hours and 26 minutes.

More Wintry Weather

7:53 AM Mon, Feb 11, 2008 |

Unlike our last 2 big winter weather events which were all snow, this one will be more of a mix. That makes the forecast very difficult. Generally, an inch of rain converts to about 10 inches of snow. Once you start adding sleet and freezing rain into the equation with different ratios, the numbers get a lot harder to get a handle on. If you miss the timing or temperature by just a very tiny bit, it can make a large difference in the fore...

A Crazy Weather Week

5:41 PM Mon, Jan 28, 2008 |

Wind, storms, rollercoaster temperatures and snow are all in the forecast this week.

Conditions will remain windy ahead of a cold front that will move through on Tuesday. There is a risk of strong storms with potentially damaging winds mainly early on Tuesday.

Behind the front, a very strong northwest wind will bring in much colder temperatures. As a matter of fact, I expect Tuesday's noon temperature at about 60 degrees ...

Roller Coaster Temperatures

3:35 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008 |

What a ride it's been! The month started out cold but then we set record high temperatures on the 6th and 7th of January. It's hard to remember those two 73 degree days when you're dealing with single digit temperatures! Those temperatures combined with a strong cold front on the 8th helped to bring severe thunderstorms and a quick end to the warm-up. We were right about normal there for a while but then on the 18th an arctic cold front ar...

LIttle Icing In The Metro

2:34 PM Mon, Dec 10, 2007 |

So you may wonder what all the hoopla is about because you haven't seen hardly any ice where you are. For much of the St. Louis Metro area, this has been the case. It's pretty amazing what a difference 1 degree can make. First of all, temperatures in the metro are usually a bit warmer than those in the outlying areas. And secondly, while I'm still new here, seems the street crews do a great job of treating the roads in the metro too. >> Continue reading: LIttle Icing In The Metro

Wintry Weather Update

8:15 AM Sat, Dec 08, 2007 |

I want to add to what Steve talks about below. The computer models have been trending colder so the icing threat has increased for Saturday night into Sunday. As of now, the NW parts of the viewing area (all areas North and West of St. Louis County) are under a Freezing Rain Advisory from 6pm Saturday to 6pm Sunday as accumulations are looking much more likely. At this point we could see anywhere from a glazing up to .25". Once you get to...

Winter Weather Awareness Day

3:00 PM Tue, Nov 13, 2007 |

November 14, 2007 has been designated Winter Weather Awareness Day. Winter storms and cold weather can be very dangerous. This is a good time to double check and make sure you're prepared.

Let's start with the cold. Too much time in extreme cold can lead to frostbite, hypothermia or death. Did you know that and average of 15 people die in Missouri every year due to the extreme cold? Infants and the elderly are the most suscepti...
