A Year To Remember (Or To Forget)

12:37 PM Wed, Dec 31, 2008 |

I can't recall a year that brought such an amazing array of dazzling but dangerous weather to Missouri and Illinois. 2008 will go down in the books as a year of wild, wet, and tumultuous weather in and around St. Louis.

The year was bookended by severe thunderstorms, getting off to an early start with a round of hail, wind damage, and a couple of tornadoes on January 7th. At the other end of the calendar, flash flooding and severe we...

Severe Saturday -- At Least One Tornado Touches Down!

7:04 AM Mon, Dec 29, 2008 |

Needless to say, the week between Christmas and New Year's Day is not historically known for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes... snow and ice, maybe, but not thunderstorms. Well, history-shmistory! Residents of eastern Missouri and western Illinois will remember the end of 2008 as stormy, not snowy. Strong thunderstorms producing hail, damaging winds, and even tornadoes marched across the Mississippi River valley Saturday, December 27. W...

Wettest Year On Record

9:47 PM Tue, Dec 23, 2008 |

2008 is officially the wettest year on record in St. Louis with 55. 98" of precipitation (and counting as it's still raining tonight). With only 8 more days in the year, we broke the record record at 1:02 pm on December 23rd. The previous record was 54.97" of rain in 1982.

Here's a link to the top ten wettest years and how Columbia, MO...

Will It Be A White Christmas? Update #2

4:46 PM Sun, Dec 21, 2008 |

It's Sunday and I just poured over the latest forecast information, paying close attention to the possibility of a White Christmas. I created a video, click here, to explain the complicated pattern and my latest thinking on the chance of a White Christmas.

A White Christmas?

5:45 PM Fri, Dec 19, 2008 |

For kids and kids at heart, here's your White Christmas update:

A storm system will move through Tuesday and Wednesday, but right now the forecast projections are leaning towards mostly rain. That's because just as the cold, below freezing air arrives Wednesday morning, the moisture will be leaving. If today's forecast holds, it doesn't look like we'll see snow on the ground for Christmas.

But wait! There's still a c...

More Freezing Rain? How Does It Form?

5:33 PM Tue, Dec 16, 2008 |

Kent and I have been looking at a storm setting up for Thursday that likely will produce an ice storm in the Midwest. It looks like the ice storm is going to be North of St. Louis. An area North and South of a line from Quincy, IL to Peoria to Chicago seems to be the target for this ice accumulation. Here in the St. Louis area it will start out below freezing Thursday morning with pockets of light freezing rain that then should turn ...

Impending Doom

9:29 PM Fri, Dec 12, 2008 |

As if the Monday morning commute isn't threatening enough with the I-64/Hwy 40 ordeal - how 'bout we throw down some ice to make it interesting. We're still on track for a rain to ice to snow storm early next week. As usual I'm seeing some variance from model run to model run but there is enough consistancy to warrent the hype.

As of Friday evening at 9:30 I'm still not convinced that the temperature Monday morning will be below freez...

Bad Timing

7:57 PM Wed, Dec 10, 2008 |

The moment we've all been waiting for is almost here. On Monday, December 15 Interstate 64/Highway 40 is scheduled to re-open from I-270 to I-170. Now if the weather will just cooperate.

As we head toward the weekend we look forward to a nice warm-up. A brief set-back on Friday as a weak clipper pushes through with a chance for a few flurries. After that it gets windy and mild on Saturday. Sunday looks mild too but there is a chance f...

What are those bright lights in the sky?

10:16 AM Fri, Dec 05, 2008 |

Attention skywatchers!

I've fielded a few phone calls and e-mails this week asking about a couple of bright "stars" in the early evening sky. If you haven't noticed them, head outside about an hour after sunset this evening (sunset time is 4:40 PM today) and look to the southwest.

Rain, Snow & A Winter Car Kit

4:19 PM Tue, Dec 02, 2008 |

Wednesday will bring us a chance for rain and perhaps as early as the evening commute some snow may mix in as well. In the evening we may see it turn to all snow briefly before the moisture moves out and we're left with a few flurries in the evening. Because this will be a brief snow and because pavement temperatures will be above freezing, there will be little to no accumulation. If any accumulation occurs it will be less than an in...
