Fall Colors and our First Frost

9:27 AM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 |

Fall officially began more than a week ago, but for the first time this this season, we're actually starting to feel that transition out of summer and into Autumn!

Matt here in the 4Warn Storm Center, and I am ecstatic to finally see a more typical Fall weather pattern setting up, at least for a few days, across much of the Midwest. After 13 straight days of high temperatures in the 70s and 80s, and only two days so far this month wit...

Autumn Begins 10:44 AM Monday!

4:10 PM Sun, Sep 21, 2008 |

Since this Summer hasn't been as hot as past years, maybe it is easy to believe that Fall starts Monday. The Autumnal Equinox marks the beginning of Autumn and that occurs at 10:44 AM.

Why is it such a specific time?
At that time the sun crosses the celestial equator, meaning the sun is directly in line with the equator at that moment.

Why Is It When Fall Starts?
But ...

Let's Go Flying!

4:21 PM Thu, Sep 18, 2008 |

What a beautiful blue sky we have enjoyed all week in St. Louis. Temperatures have been cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. I tend to get supercharged in weather like this and find ways to do things outside. After a rough weekend of record rainfall our local golf courses should have all recovered nicely by this weekend so get out and enjoy.

One of the signature outdoor events in St. Louis every year is the Great Forest P...

Don't Like Ike!

6:09 AM Mon, Sep 15, 2008 |

The remnants of Hurricane Ike went on a wet rampage as they rolled through our area Sunday morning. The storm, at that point a tropical depression, brought heavy rain and gusty winds to a wide swath of real estate. Flash flooding was a major problem.

Now, with Ike out of our hair, and with dry weather on the way for at least the next five days, our attention in the 4Warn Storm Center turns to river flooding. Water from Sunday's heav...

Flooding Across The Area

9:39 AM Sun, Sep 14, 2008 |

As the remnants of Ike have moved across the area this morning, we have received many reports of flooding. Most locations have picked up 3-7 inches of rain in a very short amount of time which has caused creeks and streams to pour out of their banks. There are numerous reports of road closures as well as some evacuations. For a list of storm reports click >> Continue reading: Flooding Across The Area

Holy Curvature Batman-Tropical Storm Hanna

Did you see the wicked turn North in Tropical Storm Hanna? Check out the two links below, one is a radar loop of the storm and the other is the historical track of the storm.

Gustav, Our Rain Chances, Hanna and Ike

4:05 PM Mon, Sep 01, 2008 |

Hurricane Gustav came ashore about 70 miles Southwest of New Orleans as a strong category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 110 mph. Because the intensity weakened a bit (though still a big time storm) and because the storm hit much farther away from New Orelans, the Crescent City was spared the type of damage Katrina brought. But it was the fact that (so far) the levees have not failed that has made the big differe...
