Severe Storms Leave Trail of Damage

8:35 AM Fri, Aug 29, 2008 |

Strong thunderstorms rumbled through Missouri Thursday evening, weakening as they pressed into Illinois and southern Missouri. Given the tranquil weather we've enjoyed for most of this August, it had been quite some time since damaging storms impacted our area.

The trouble began a little after 7:30 PM Thursday when a funnel cloud was reported by law enforcement in Montgomery City, MO, west of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Just min...

Nice Here But Not In The Gulf

6:23 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |

August has been a very tolerable month in St. Louis. Known for having oppressive heat and humidity this time of year we really got a break this in 2008. This does not mean that the cold season will be any colder than normal. In fact the 3 month forecast that takes us into Autumn is calling for a chance of above normal temperatures.

After some strong storms this evening (Thursday) I expect a near perfect 3 day weekend to cap off our Su...

An Unusually Cool August

11:39 AM Tue, Aug 26, 2008 |

While the month still isn't over, this has been a very pleasant August so far! Typically the heat and humidity can be brutal this time of year but that has rarely been the case this month. The average high in St. Louis has been about 87 degrees and we've only had 4 days with temperatures above 90 degrees! Last August we had 26 days over 90 degrees, including 6 days in the triple digits! I'd venture to say that this is the greatest stretch o...

Switching Into A Wet Pattern

4:02 PM Wed, Aug 20, 2008 |

It's been two weeks since we've had measurable rain at St. Louis Lambert Airport, but that's about to change. While it won't be a rainout the next four days, at the very least we have a rain chance in the forecast tonight through the weekend. This has been an unusual dry spell in what has been a very wet year so far. In fact, at one point in July the Weather Service deemed this the wettest start to the year on record for St. Louis.

A Nice Break

8:27 PM Fri, Aug 15, 2008 |

Greetings all. Kent Ehrhardt here in the 4 Warn Storm Center. Since late last week Steve Templeton and I have had our eyes on an unusual upper level low pressure system. Unusual because this time of year we don't normally see these types of weather systems. Based on the consistency of the models from run to run we were anticipating a fairly wet pattern over the weekend. Not a wash-out, but it appeared rain was likely. But beginning early yeste...

August -- 2007 vs. 2008

9:50 AM Fri, Aug 15, 2008 |

It's the middle of August, and in a typical year, we would be busy in the 4Warn Storm Center calculating the heat index and keeping up with the latest heat advisories. But, this year has been anything but typical.

An unusual weather pattern over the mid-section of the country has kept the worst of the heat and humidity to our west and south so far this August, keeping us on the cool side of the averages for this time of year. Since t...

One More Hot Day

8:36 PM Mon, Aug 04, 2008 |

At least it was brief. Tuesday will see temperatures rise into the upper 90s for the second day in a row. With heat indicies expected to soar to near 110 an Extensive Heat Warning is in effect through Tuesday evening. About the time the heat warning expires we should see the threat for thunderstorms move into the area. Some of the storms could be se...

We Caught A Break

9:41 PM Fri, Aug 01, 2008 |

Earlier this week we were calling for intense heat this weekend. But a little cool front is pushing through this evening (Friday) and that should be enough to keep it tolerable this weekend. Make no mistake it will be hot, but temperatures will be closer to normal. In fact the deep humidity that resulted in the fog on Thursday and Friday mornings will decrease.

Bottom Line: Hot this weekend but a little less humid.

The bad news...
