The Forecast: On Tuesday a cold front will bring a cool down to the area, ending eight days in a row of 90 degree heat or higher, including Sunday's 99 degree high and Monday's 98 degree high. Heat Index: With more heat surely around the corner (it's not even August yet) I thought I'd explain a little bit about the heat index. Firstly, you may hear us say "heat index" and "feels like temperature" and wonder what's the diff... The St. Louis air quality forecast for Thursday, July 17 is ORANGE For over a decade the News 4 Storm Team has provided the official daily EPA ozone forecast for the St. Louis region. The forecast we produce here in the 4 Warm Storm Center is distributed to newspapers, radio stations and even other TV stations. It's a unique challenge for us and one we take very seriously. This year our responsibilities have b... July is known for its hot and humid days in the St. Louis area. It's unusual to see a cold front push this far southward during the mid-summer... unusual, but not unheard of. It actually happened over the weekend. A few strong to severe thunderstorms developed ahead of a front Friday and Saturday, but then, bucking the usual summer trend, a cold front passed through our entire viewing area, leaving cooler and less humid air in its wa... I think we'll see some thunderstorms on Friday mainly from metro St. Louis westward. But my forecast focus most of this week has been another potent cold front on track to push through here late Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms are likely along and ahead of the front and some of the storms could be severe late Saturday into Saturday night. The good news is the air behind this front, once again, is a little drier and a little cooler... As the River falls, some may be thinking that we're done with the flood threat. But the Mississippi River is still not below flood stage in our area and so the flooding impact continues. However, take a look at the chart below where the line graph forecasts the falling river level in Winfield. The going forecast has the Mississippi falling to below flood stage in Winfield this weekend. At St. Louis the Mississippi should fall below flood... I doubt you've ever heard me refer to "Global Warming" on TV. That doesn't mean I don't address global climate though. I prefer to refer to it as "Climate Change". I'm no expert on it but I have attended several confrences that focused on the changing climate of our planet. In fact more and more meteorological conferences over the past few years have dedicated much of their content to Climatology. In a nutshell here's my thoughts: ...These are never easy. All of us in the 4 Warn Storm Center have been pondering this holiday forecast for over a week now. Since we went to a 7-day forecast it adds just a little more pressure when we approach a holiday. Especially a warm season holiday that is so dependent on outdoor activities. So as of 4:15 Thursday afternoon here's our thinking: A cool front that pased through St. Louis earlier this morning continues to make good pr... Could it be? Might we finally be nearing the end of the Great Flood of '08? As of the time of this post (Tuesday morning, July 1), the Mississippi River level is falling from Louisiana downstream to Alton. The level in St. Louis is holding steady, with a slow drop expected in the coming days. We'll have to wait until this evening (and into Wednesday) to finally see a crest in Chester. What about flooding off the Mississippi?... |
