Enough With The Rain Already

3:49 PM Mon, May 26, 2008 |

The Memorial weekend for most was a bit of a washout. Unfortunately the forecast didn't play out as originally thought. But it didn't just rain, we had a deluge. I was caught out in it at one point and I think the raindrops were as big as my head. Well, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration.

So the airmass was super moist and we were in a situation where thunderstorms just kept developing and moving over the same areas over and o...

Feeling the Heat -- New Heat Advisory & Heat Warning Criteria

10:13 AM Wed, May 21, 2008 |

Severe thunderstorm warnings, flash flood watches, wind advisories...

Anytime the National Weather Service issues a watch, warning, or advisory, they do so becuase certain pre-determined criteria have been met, or will be met soon.

For example, consider a severe thunderstorm warning. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service don't just see a strong storm on radar and decide to issue a warning. It's much more complicated ...

Air Quality Forecasting Begins

5:18 PM Tue, May 20, 2008 |

Today is the official start to what we call our "Aircast", which is an air quality forecast for theSt. Louis area. Again this year we're proud to be the storm team chosen to create your air quality forecast, which updates in the mid to late afternoon on KMOV.com or will be featured in our evening weathercasts.

This year we will begin incorporating particulate matter (dust and small particulates), however once again it will be low le...

Time for a May Report Card

9:00 AM Fri, May 16, 2008 |

Unless you've been living under a rock since the start of the year, you know that our weather has been unusually wet of late. If you have been living under a rock, you've probably been flooded out of your home more than once over the last three months.

Nevertheless, the statistics are remarkable...

A New Record Set For St. Louis

3:36 PM Mon, May 12, 2008 |

So far this year, at least through May 11, St. Louis has received over 22 inches of rain! This is the most rainfall EVER recorded through this time period. Normally we would have about 13 inches. That puts us more than 9 inches above normal.

1. 22.34" (2008)
2. 21.12" (1927)
3. 20.59" (1898)
4. 20.43" (1912)

Mamma Mia -- What a Mother's Day Weekend!

9:39 AM Mon, May 12, 2008 |

Mother's Day of 2008 won't exactly be remembered for its picnic-prime weather in the St. Louis area. From severe thunderstorms Saturday evening to remarkable winds Sunday, the weekend weather was just plain ugly -- sorry Mom!

Saturday started with some promise. Sunshine was breaking through the clouds, and temperatures were fairly mild, but by mid-afternoon, rain and thunderstorms had moved into eastern Missouri and western Illinois....

Another Round Of Heavy Rain

8:01 PM Tue, May 06, 2008 |

Tuesday evening in the Storm Center and Steve Templeton and I are going over the latest Super Predictor output. If you saw my weathercast at 5:00 today you may recall that I mentioned that we will be watching the track and timing of this next system very carefully. The models have consistently produced a swath of heavy rain across our area. Some areas could see up to 5 inches of rain and that seems reasonable. But with each new computer model ...

Severe Threat On Friday

8:31 PM Thu, May 01, 2008 |

As with any severe weather threat this one has it's uncertainties. The models have been speeding up the timing with each new run. As of this (Thursday) evening Steve Templeton and I have narrowed the severe threat timing down to between 10 am and 5 pm on Friday. We may see a few isolated showers and storms earlier Friday morning but the instablility seems to peak from 10-5. The threat will move from west to east across the viewing area so the ...
