January 2008 ArchivesAs of 6:00 Wednesday evening I think we're still on track for a major winter storm to impact the St. louis area beginning Thursday afternoon. While much of this script remains unwritten there are a few ingredients that appear to be coming togther as planned. A deepening low pressure system is rolling out of the southwest and it appears it will be following a track very similar to what several of the models have been advertising. So I... Wind, storms, rollercoaster temperatures and snow are all in the forecast this week. Conditions will remain windy ahead of a cold front that will move through on Tuesday. There is a risk of strong storms with potentially damaging winds mainly early on Tuesday. Behind the front, a very strong northwest wind will bring in much colder temperatures. As a matter of fact, I expect Tuesday's noon temperature at about 60 degrees ... What a ride it's been! The month started out cold but then we set record high temperatures on the 6th and 7th of January. It's hard to remember those two 73 degree days when you're dealing with single digit temperatures! Those temperatures combined with a strong cold front on the 8th helped to bring severe thunderstorms and a quick end to the warm-up. We were right about normal there for a while but then on the 18th an arctic cold front ar... The next 6 weeks are the toughest for me. I consider mid January through February the dead of Winter. March can be pretty rough too but by then at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. Early last week we enjoyed record highs, the so-called January thaw. Temperatures so far this week have been pretty nice but they are about to turn ugly. I expect a brief bout of mixed precipitation beginning late Wednesday night into midday on T... A slow moving cold front combined with record warmth and lots of available moisture brought an extended round of spring like severe severe storms to the News 4 viewing area last night and this morning. Most of the storm reports in our area were from hail or high winds/wind damage. Hail of 0.75-1inch diameter was reported in Palmyra, Hannibal, Silex, Eolia, Washington, Marthasville, Cottlesville, Cuba, Sullivan and Bourbon, Missouri.... What a weekend! We didn't just break the record high temperature Sunday -- we obliterated it! Sunday afternoon's high temperature of 73 degrees far surpassed the previous record of 67! That benchmark temperature had been in place since 1907. In other words, on Sunday, we shattered a record high that had stood for over one hundred years! Garnering less attention, but still just as impressive, is the fact that we also set a "r... From a January ice storm, to oppresive August heat, to a big December snow, 2007 was literally a year of ups and downs! Now that the year is over, our friends at the National Weather Service office in Weldon Spring have done some number crunching. When all the numbers are tallied, 2007 comes in as relatively warm and dry. Official temperature and precipitation records run all the way back to 1870 in St. Louis, and 2007 is tie...
On walks with your dog watch for anti-freeze which drips on the pavement from cars. Ant-freeze may taste good to your dog, but it's leth... |
