October 2007 ArchivesRemember the severe weather outbreak we experienced earlier in the monrth. The Storm Prediction center is reporting that we had a record tornado outbreak and one of the busiest October for tornadoes on record. Here's a link to the release from the Storm Prediction Center: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2007/20071031_tornado.html ...So tonight on the 5'Oclock news Kent talked about how we can get just about any type of weather on Halloween. Many of you may remember 1993 with a trace of snow. Sure it wasn't a snow storm, but snow on Halloween? And then there's been years when Halloween has been in the 80s, even close to 90! The record high is 88 in 1968. Here's some other interesting stats for Halloween: It's going to be a sunny weekend in St. Louis in more ways than one! First of all the weather is shaping up beautifully. After a foggy start the sun should break out on Saturday. Then a chilly start on Sunday (perhaps the coldest yet) with sunny, cool and dry weather the rest of the day. The next chance for rain appears to be Thursday next week. It will be EXTRA sunny here at News 4 this weekend as we welcome the newest member...
It's from 9am to 3pm out at the National Weather Service offices located near Weldon Spring, MO in St. Charles County. In fact, I've posted a link below and the weather service has provided directions and detials about what you'll see when you visit.
This morning's low temperatures were not the coolest of the season so far, but factor in a stiff breeze out of the north, and what do you get? The coolest-feeling morning of the season so far. Huh? This morning's low temperature of 47 degrees at Lambert International Airport was the 4th coolest since the start of September (the unofficial start to autumn). Here are the top 3... October 11: 4... Have you seen our 5-day forecast lately? Here is a rough draft of a graphic that I'm working on for today's edition of News4 at Noon. That's quite a change from this past weekend's weather. Saturday, we hit 83 degrees, and warm south winds pushed the mercury to 84 Sunday afternoon. The unusuall... The National Weather Service Storm Survey team has been working hard lately. I spoke to the Weather Service today by phone and they had multiple crews out in the field. They were looking closely at the damage from the Paris, MO tornadoes from Wednesday night and also looking for possible confirmation of reported tornadoes in and around Bond, Co. Illinois. As of Friday night there are no preliminary reports out on the unconfirmed torn... October is not exactly synonomous with severe weather in Missouri and Illinois, but strong storms can and do happen in the fall. The last two days serve as evidence of that. Here is a map from the Storm Prediction Center showing reports of severe weather (large hail, strong winds, and possible tornadoes) from Wednesday, October 17. It's been a busy afternoon in the 4 Warn Storm Center as we never stop tracking threatening weather. A serious severe storm outbreak is underway from southwest Missouri into Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. That is where the most unstable atmosphere resides but if any strong storms develop there they may have the ability to move into our area late this Wedneday evening. The rain threat appears to end by Thursday morning. Friday will be cooler wi... Well, the energetic storm system continues to bring a threat of storms to our area today through the overnight. Below is the Storm Prediction Center's severe risk for today through tomorrow morning. There is a threat for all types of severe weather including hail, wind damage and tornadoes, from this afternoon on. For St. Louis, it appears that threat especially increases tonight through about 5 to 7am. That means there is a chance ... A storm system will drop into the High Plains Wednesday and help to push warm and moist air into the St. Louis area Wednesday afternoon. A few storms are possible across our area in the afternoon and evening. We may have a few strong to severe storms, especially in the evening for St. Louis, but the higher risk for severe weather during the day is in Western Missouri and Kansas, closer to the core of this storm system. As that sto... "Much Needed Rain" is a popular phrase meteorologists are using this week. We have a couple chances for showers and storms starting with today through tomorrow morning. Another chance arrives late Wednesday through Thursday morning. But the reason we say "much needed" is because most of the area is in a drought. In fact, parts of our viewing area in Illinois are in a severe drought. Below is the latest drought monitor. If you wan... It's fitting that on the day we have the coolest air since April we start looking ahead to the Winter Outlook. In the previous blog we posted a link for the average frost dates, but now let's talk about the climate outlook for December through February as the latest forecast from the Climate Prediction Center has just been released. On a national level the forecast calls for good chances of a warmer than normal winter, but slightl... As I'm sure you've figured out by now the first week of October was warmer than normal. In fact it was the warmest first week of October on record in St. Louis and several other communities. Here's a link to more information from the local National Weather Service office: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/crnews/display_story.php?wfo=lsx&storyid=10505&sourc...
First though, a front approaching this afternoon will cause showers and some thunderstorms. This won't be drought busting rainfall, but some isolated heavy downpours can be expected. Some of those storm cells with heavy rain could produce a lot of lightning and gusty winds but windepsrea... It's looking a little bleak for Fall color. It's been a tough year for trees. An ice storm in January, hard freeze in April and the intense heat and drought of late Summer have all taken their toll. There's rain in my forecast for Monday and cooler tempertures for the middle of the week. That may help a little. Some area trees have shed leaves but that is more a result of heat and drought stress than the season. The cooler temperatures... Wanted to give you all the opportunity to see the latest photos and info from the National Weather Service regarding storms that rolled through Missouri and Illinois on Tuesday night. If you were watching yesterday (Wed.) at 5:00 and 6:00 you know that I was up in Palmyra reporting live on the damage. The owner of the welding company that had the damage was in one of his large pole barn buildings when the storm hit. Fortunately he wasn't hurt.... Steve here, I have some preliminary results from the storm survey crews at the National Weather Service. I should emphasize that this is preliminary and not official, but the crews called in their initial results after surveying two areas where a tornado struck. The first is in the town of Palmyra, MO about 130 miles North of St. Louis. Kent will be live in Palmyra tonight, inspecting some of the damage. We have reports of cars fli... Steve here in the weather center and I wanted to give you an update on the storm chances tonight, in particular the chance of severe weather. In yesterday's blog I mentioned that the greatest threat of severe weather was West of St. Louis. The Storm Prediction Center agrees and has shifted the "slight risk" of severe storms area just to our West. It does include part of the News 4 viewing area however, and I've posted the latest graphical f... Another warm up is in store Tuesday and possibly some strong to severe storms Tuesday into Wednesday morning. The Storm Prediction Center's severe weather risk for that time period is pasted below, and you'll see we are in the "slight risk" area. I do think we have a chance for severe storms in the area tomorrow, but I wanted to take a chance to let you know what I'm seeing in the computer models when it comes to the timing and the location o... |
