February 2007 ArchivesLatest storm system on track to rattle us with thunderstorms overnight and into Thursday. Threats focus on strong winds and hail late tonight. Heavy rain potential warrents a Flash Flood Warning for northern parts of the viewing area. A broken line of storms should form over western and central Missouri early on Thursday morning then race east through our area and exit before noon. This line may contain supercells which could produce to... This next storm is very similar to the storm that wrecked most of last weekend. It really seems to want to wrap up into a tight circulation which means lots of wind. Wouldn't be surprised to see some gusts to 40 mph Thursday. The SPC slight risk area is very similar to the one posted late last week. Although we had a couple of cells go severe in Warren and St. Charles counties the worst was to ou...
Another storm system will whip through the Midwest bringing a quick rise in temperatures here in the bi-state, along with some storms, and then a quick drop in temperatures along with some wind. Sounds a lot like last weekends storms right? Well, this is very similar, but we don't expect nearly as much rain, there just isn't as much moisture with this system. However, there is a threat of severe storms. In fact here is the latest thr... Well, it's Friday evening and Kent and I have been pouring over the weather maps as we look ahead to a chance of thunderstorms this Saturday. Both Kent and I agree we have a good chance for rain in the morning and then thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon to mid-evening. Although we can't rule out a severe storm, severe weather appears unlikely for our viewing area. The Storm Prediction Center still has our area in a slight r...
According to St. Louis Lambert, our snowfall for the season is 12.9". But normal snowfall for the season up to this point is 18". This means we're about 5" below average. Why does... Hi everyone... Matt here in the weather center Thursday morning preparing for today's Noon newscast. It's been a long time since we've had to think about severe thunderstorms, but spring (which is our peak season for strong thunder-boomers) begins in less than a month! In fact, now might be a good time to brush up on your severe weather safety plans at home, school, work, and everywhere inbetween. Here's why...
It sure feels like we've put the cold winter weather behind us...or have we? The next several days will all be warm, that's the good news. But a potent Spring-Like storm rolls in on Saturday with a chance for heavy rain and thunderstorms. Perhaps even a few isolated severe storms later in the day and night Saturday. However, it will become colder on Sunday, in fact the going forecast calls for temperatures to be warmer in the morning then ...
It's funny that during December (the 16th warmest December on record in St. Louis) I was asked, "Where's Winter?". Now the question is more like "When is Winter Over?". If you want it warmer, then you're in luck...sort of. Friday morning will be one of the if not the coldest morning of the Winter. But then it warms quickly Friday afternoon, and by next week we'll be b... Happy Valentine's Day!!! Warm hearts -- cold air... that's today's forecast in a nutshell. Afternoon temperatures will struggle to climb after a very chilly start this morning, but at least our snow storm is a thing of the past. As usual, Tuesday's snowfall accumulations varied quite a bit depending on your specific location. Here are just some of the snowfall totals from across our area... White H... Very impressive Winter storm. I was outside for live shots at noon Downtown and thought for a minute I was in Chicago. Haven't seen a storm like this for a while. Our reporters and photographers are arriving back at the station from their morning assignments and they're pretty rattled by the driving conditions. Even though the accumulating snow is tapering off as of right now (12:45 pm) strong winds and falling temperatures are going to make t... UPDATE ON THE APPROACHING STORM It's Matt here in the 4Warn Weather Center, steadily losing hair as our next winter storm approaches. This is always a very un-nerving time for those who make a living predicting the weather -- the "calm before the storm". It's interesting to read the blog entries below to see how our thinking has changed with time as this storm system has moved closer. A... Are you craving more weather info? Is that why you're here at our blog? Or just really bored and surfing the net for something interesting. Either way, we're here to help. Here's an update on the next storm system and in particular what to expect for the Monday morning commute (I know, I know, the last thing you want to think about on the weekend is going back to work). Well, just as Matt's earlier post says, meteorologists pour over... Hi everybody... Matt here in the weather center. Anyone who is personally aquainted with a meteorologist has likely come to the realization that we tend to be odd ducks. We spend the majority of our work-day pouring over maps, numbers, figures, forecast models... any kind of data we can get our hands on. We pull our hair out over issues as simple as a degree or two when forecasting a high temperature, and issues as complex as forecas... We appear to be locked in to this cold pattern for at least the next 2 weeks. There may be some brief excursions above freezing but the normal highs this time of year are in the low to mid 40s. That's the bad news. The good news is that in 2 weeks we'll be into the last week of February and closing in on Spring! In the mean time here's the latest 8 to 14 day temperature outlook from the Climate P... Reports ranged from "bright lights" to "something burning with a flaming tail". So, what were those objects in the sky Sunday night?!? While most eyes were glued to the soggy SuperBowl right here on News4, some skywacthers and drivers were treated to a rare astronomical display. Apparently, a meteor (or perhaps several) streaked across the sky over the bi-state area Sunday evening. There are some reports that pieces of thes... Happy Groundhog Day!!! But... honestly... How on Earth did it come to this? Who decided that the best way to create a late winter prognostication was be to pull a groundhog out of a tree stump in Pennsylvania?
You've got questions, and we've got answers. If you've ever wondered about the age-old tra... When you mention El Nino most of us here in the midwest think of dry, mild Winters. On the west coast they relate to wet winters and mudslides. In Florida and along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts El Ninos supress hurricane activity (that's a good thing). But each El Nino has it's own unique characteristics. Some are weak and others are strong. Some extend through more than one season while others come and go relatively quickly. This Win... |
