January 2007 ArchivesIf you were a school-aged child in the St. Louis area in the early 1980s, you likely remember the 30th and 31st of January, 1982. A snowstorm, the likes of which only comes along once in 70 years (on average), crippled a stretch of real estate from the eastern Ozarks to central Illinois.
Let's set the scen... January isn't exactly synonomous with severe thunderstorms in the St. Louis area, but they can and do happen. Forty years ago today, a violent tornado ripped a 21-mile-long gash in the fabric of the St. Louis metropolitan area. By the time the tornado lifted off the ground, 3 people were dead and more than 200 had been injured.
From our friends at the National Weather Service Office in the St. Louis area, here is a quick snapshot of how our weekend weather-maker played out.
And, if you're interested in more specific snowfall accumulation numbers for specific areas, take a look at this list of >> Continue reading: Who Got What This Weekend? Here's a summary of our weekend storm from the national Weather Service office in Weldon Spring. ...The Sunday storm has pretty much come and gone. Up to 6 inches on the ground in parts of the viewing area so I feel pretty good about the forecast. This one was much easier than most. Of course my eyes are on the next potential snowmaker on Wednesday but on a personal note I'm more concerned about next Saturday and Sunday. I mean, can I get at least one weekend off this month!!! ...Good morning all. The Weather Service dropped the Winter Storm Watch in favor of a Snow Advisory. An indication of their confidence that we will be seeing significant snow totals. Rain snow line still sets ups precariously close to St. Louis. I'll call that the wild card for now. Initiation looks to be around 10 pm to midnight in metro, earlier to the west. 5 inches +/- in my forecast. Freezing rain and sleet still in the mix south of St. Loui... Hi everyone -- it's Matt here in the weather center. Thanks to the quiet and straight-forward forecast across the bi-state area Friday, I've had some time to really delve into the latest forecast models, all in an effort to determine exactly how this weekend's storm system will impact our area. The closer this storm gets, the clearer the forecast becomes. We'll continue to update and tweak the forecast today and Saturday both on New...
Still on track for what should be a pretty decent snowmaker this weekend. Moisture certainly in place to our south courtesy a very impressive low lattitude jet. Rain from Mexico through Texas into western Tennessee. Some freezing rain and sleet in colder temperatures at night. Although the main upper level energy tracks a little farther north in recent model runs, latest ensemble run produces 3 to 6 inches of snow in heaviest bands (not necess...
As many of you know I spent last week in Steamboat Springs, Colorado at the annual Steamboat Weather Summit. CBS News was there and did a nice report. You can see the entire piece by clicking on the red button on our home page. The Steamboat trip is a real highlight for me and I look forward to going every year. I think I've been to 16 of the conferences having only missed one when I broke my leg racing motocross back in '99. I've had...
Photo Taken By: Jeff Violet Hi all. Matt here in the weather center. As always, our viewers came through for us over the weekend by submitting tons of incredible weather photos like the one you see above. This photo was taken at Daniels Farm... I'll take rain over ice any day. We've still got a chance for some ice overnight, maybe even some snow, but it looks like temperatures in the metro area will remain above freezing until later tonight and then the precipitation should end. Western portions of the viewing area are still seeing temperatures at or below freezing though. Of course I'll update the 5 day forecast tonight at 10:00. But I will tell you that I expect some very winter-l... As of 3:00 Saturday afternoon (1/13/07) we await the onslaught of yet another wave of freezing rain and sleet. It seems, sometimes, as if St. Louis is right on the rain snow line in these events and this one is certainly no exception. A drive down highways 40 and 70 from west to east reveals quite a different scene. In St. Charles and western St. Louis County trees are laden with a thick, heavy coating of ice. Closer to the city and into the m... Why is it that small talk between complete strangers always seems to turn to the topic of weather? How many times have you been standing in line at the bank, riding in an elevator, picking up some groceries, when someone turns to you and says something like... "Boy, I sure hope I can get home before the freezing rain gets here." ...or... "Sounds like we're in for some snow, huh?" Our chats so often revolve arou... It's Steve here, and I know we've been talking more about chances for periods of freezing rain this weekend, so I thought I'd take a minute to go into more detail about how freezing rain and ice storms form. Freezing rain is rain that freezes on contact once it hits the ground. What happens is cold below freezing air moves in close to the surface. However, aloft it's still warm and above freezing. As the rain drops fall from that wa... How's that for alliteration?!? It has been the topic of conversation around many office water coolers in the News4 viewing area for the last few days. Winter weather! Is it really coming? When will it arrive? How will this impact travel? Trust me when I tell you that we're devoting nearly all of our efforts in the 4Warn Weather Center to answering these questions. As we get closer to the weekend, the track of this approach... Well, a lot of people are already talking about the nasty weather for the weekend. It's all coming from a storm system that will move across the Rockies and then slowly drift across the Midwest late this week and this weekend. This slow movement of the front will allow several disturbances to ride into the bi-state producing several rounds of rain. Some forecast models indicate the rain could be heavy Friday into Saturday. But it's... |
