Up until about five minutes ago, I couldn't think of too many things about being the Queen of England that I wouldn't like ... what with the jewelry and the money and the castles and the smartypants accent. But, thanks to a report by The Associated Press, my royal aspirations have been dashed. You see, I would sooner hang-glide the length of Galveston Island naked than allow my gigantic, embarrassing underwear to be put on display in a museum. Such is the fate of Queen Victoria.
A pair of comically huge bloomers that once belonged to the queen has been acquired by Britain's Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection at Kensington Palace. And when I say huge, I mean it. Like parachute huge. Like one of those tarps they put over houses when they spray for bugs huge. Like Kanye West's ego huge. Huge. If we're going by the numbers here (and why not?!), these undies were made to fit a 56-inch waist. That's right. And they come down to the knees. Makes you feel better about your granny panties, doesn't it? According to the AP, the undies have a matching chemise--one can only imagine how stylish it must be - and are embroidered with a "VR." Museum curator Alexandra Kim told the AP that Victoria had a 20-inch waist when she was young, but after having nine kids (OMG) that changed entirely. Kim said the museum purchased the sizeable skivvies for $993 earlier this summer. She said they were probably handed down to a servant after Victoria died. How'd you like to have been a fly on the wall when they read that will? To you, Lord Stuffybottom, I bequeath this castle, a pile of jewels and Ireland. And to you, random servant person, I bequeath my used underwear. Ummmm ... Thanks? 1 CommentsLeave a comment |

It was actually quite common for ladies to give their servants old clothes. They may have been given to the servant before she died. This is a pair Victorian bloomers. Notice how low the crotch is. And there is most likly a slit in the crotch as well. A fun piece of feminine history. We've truly come a long way.
