Sad because you can't get a date? You need to make yourself more attractive to the opposite sex. A good way to do that is to put on your goth gear and frantically stuff your face full of black noodles in front of a crowd of commiserating lonely hearts. Wait ... err ... we mean bad. A bad way to do that. Sorry. But a bunch of South Koreans who consider themselves unlucky in love ignored our advice ate the inky noodles with haste this week, Reuters reports. They were celebrating "Black Day."
Black Day is a holiday after Valentine's Day where singles don dark clothing and eat black food, searching for companionship. You know, in case the indignity of datelessness wasn't enough. Apparently marketers in South Korea have come up with a bunch of these love-related holidays for the 14th of every month. Some, like Black Day, have taken off. Others, like Green Day, where couples are supposed to get drunk on cheap liquor from green bottles and walk in the woods, haven't -- shock! horror! -- caught on. On Black Day this year, a movie ticket broker sponsored the black noodle speed eating competition for anyone who bought single tickets for a film. "It is depressing enough going to the movies by yourself," Max Movie's Shin Youn-joo said. "We just wanted to spread a little joy to the 'withouts.'" |
