I didn't meet up with any, but I did come across the town's two barbeque joints: City Market and Luling Barbeque. So here's a question that you might be able to answer: Which one of these is the best?
I'm glad I did. I can't say it was the best barbeque I've ever had, but you did get a lot for your money. Their menu includes brisket, pork ribs, chicken, sausage, and pork tenderloin. Combination plates are available with choice of two sides including potato salad, coleslaw, pinto beans, and macaroni and cheese for less than $7.
But if you do go to Luling, go at the end of June. That's when they have their annual Watermelon Thump, which may be the only chance you have in your life to become a melonhead for a day. No really...they have pictures of people wearing these things on their heads.
I might have to go back for the seed spitting contest. There's something about it that tells me it's going to be one melon of a good time!

Luling City Market has the better barbecue in Luling by far. You actually go into the smokehouse and order the brisket by the pound, ribs and links. They put on butcher paper, no plates here. Most folks eat it with their fingers, but you can get a plastic knife and fork if you must. This place is about the meat and I don't think anyone does the meat better. They only offer a few sides and I can't say that I ever tried them. City Market is at the top of my list for brisket.
I really miss Texas and the Good Food there!
Thanks for the tip, William. Going into the smokehouse at Luling City Market does sound pretty cool. I may have to make my way back to Luling!
