Based on current damage assessment, Centerpoint estimates that the following ZIP codes are estimated to have approximately 80 percent power restoration by the end of day on Friday, Sept. 19. Because of the damage caused by Hurricane Ike, many credit unions in the Houston/Galveston region are either closed or operating out of mobile branches. The University Federal Credit Union in Galveston, which serves the employees, doctors and nurses at UTMB, has opened a mobile branch in the parking lot of Amoco Credit Union's branch in Dickinson. Officials of Mainland Medical Center said the hospital on the Galveston County Mainland reopened its doors on Thursday. The Harris County Administrative Judge Don Stricklin said because of ongoing problems because of Hurricane Ike, jury duty calls for Sept. 22 and 23 have been canceled. City of Galveston employees will be able to be paid, even as the island tries to get back on its feet after Hurricane Ike. City Manager Steve LeBlanc announced on Thursday that checks for city employees would be handed out on Friday afternoon. Northwest Assistance Ministries will be distributing bags of ice on Thursday at their 3645 FM 1960 location in Houston from noon until 5 p.m. ...Crisis Intervention of Houston is offering around the clock phone support and referral services for those in crisis. Trained phone counselors are prepared to help people cope with the psychological aftermath of the storm by providing anonymous, confidential telephone counseling. ...In Texas and Louisiana, 28 Kohl's stores were impacted by Hurricane Ike. Currently, 24 of the stores have re-opened for business. Due to local curfews imposed by the cities and other operational considerations, some stores may be operating at reduced hours. ...Centerpoint Energy said that at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, 1.3 million of its 2 million customers were without electricity as Hurricane Ike made its away across the upper Texas Coast. |
