The Houston Public Library is opening more library locations in Houston, providing customers with access to all services, including computers, Internet, and free WiFi. Where possible, computer training labs and meeting rooms are being turned into Hurricane Ike Assistance Rooms to file for FEMA aid and insurance claims online, and emailing family and friends (assistance in accessing these online resources is being provided by on-site librarians).

Boil water advisory liften in Matagorda County

The boil water advisory has been lifted for all areas of Matagorda County.

All of the water systems in the Sargent area have been tested, and the water is safe for regular use.

Also, taxpayers impacted by the storm will have until midnight Sept. 22 to meet their tax filing obligations without incurring late filing and payment penalties. This gives residents seven extra days to file the taxes.

Texas will be providing emergency food stamps to Hurricane Ike victims who qualify and will automatically replace benefits for program participants in the storm's path.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) sought and received a federal waiver to make the emergency assistance available to low-income individuals and families living in any of the 29 counties that have been declared disaster areas.

FEMA to fund 100 percent of Ike debris removal

The federal government will reimburse the state of Texas and affected local governments for 100 percent of eligible emergency debris-removal work and emergency protective measures performed for a 14-day period retroactive to Sept. 13, the date of President Bush's major disaster declaration for Hurricane Ike.

The reimbursement can be for work undertaken by state and local authorities. It can also cover costs of direct assistance provided by federal agencies if state or local government cannot perform or contract for the work.
