Evacuee Shelters: September 2008 ArchivesThe following Red Cross shelters have availability & are open: ...A former Auchan superstore is a Houston Red Cross shelter for returning evacuees who were bussed to other Texas cities before Hurricane Ike hit. Many of these residents can't return to their homes because their homes were severely damaged or destroyed in the storm.

The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), at the request of the State of Texas, will activate its transitional sheltering initiative to allow eligible Ike evacuees from Texas, who cannot return to their homes, to stay in hotels or motels until it is safe for them go home.
