A former Auchan superstore is a Houston Red Cross shelter for returning evacuees who were bussed to other Texas cities before Hurricane Ike hit. Many of these residents can't return to their homes because their homes were severely damaged or destroyed in the storm.

Registered sex offenders must register at new addresses

Last Thursday the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) launched Operation Safe Shelter, a new emergency service that provides registered sex offender information to evacuation shelter personnel.

Since Operation Safe Shelter's launch, emergency shelters have provided 5,555 evacuee names for OAG personnel to compare with the Department of Public Safety's sex offender registry. As of today, the OAG review uncovered 18 confirmed sex offenders. An additional 36 possible matches remain under review but have not yet been confirmed by OAG personnel.

The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), at the request of the State of Texas, will activate its transitional sheltering initiative to allow eligible Ike evacuees from Texas, who cannot return to their homes, to stay in hotels or motels until it is safe for them go home.

Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston remains closed due to Hurricane Ike. The facility did recieve some damage and flooding. Since the Island remains closed at this time, all employees should stay where they are and continue to check our web site for further updates. More than 5,000 people took refuge from Hurricane Ike at 53 different state parks across Texas. Most of them, more than 2,000, stayed at Garner, including many from the Houston-Galveston area who vacation at the park each year.

The shelters in Montgomery County were shelters of last resort for victims of Hurricane Ike to "ride-out the storm." The current shelters do not have resources for long-term evacuees.

With the remainder of Hurricane Ike pounding the Texas coast this afternoon, disaster response volunteers, now on hold, are eager to return to work on homes and businesses hardest hit by the monster storm.

Evacuees from storm-damaged areas may tent camp at no cost in Texas State Parks, and they may stay in cabins or screen shelters at discounted rates.

Some of the parks have closed due to the storm, so be sure to check the latest information is available through the Texas State Parks reservation center at (512) 389-8900 or on the TPWD Web site (www.tpwd.state.tx.us).

Austin provides shelter for hurricane evacuees

The Austin area is prepared to house thousands of Hurricane Ike evacuees from the Texas coast. Plans are under way to open temporary housing facilities at middle and high school gymnasiums throughout Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties.

Evacuees are expected to provide their own bedding, towels and personal items such as medications and baby supplies such as diapers and formula. The evacuation shelters will provide a clean air-conditioned environment with food, clean restrooms and, in many cases, showers.
