Two days after the Houston area was hit by the strongest hurricane in recent history Reliant Park management officials are still in the process of assessing the damage sustained.

"This is a huge endeavor, we have 4 facilities, over 3.7 million square feet and 350 acres at Reliant Park and we are currently assessing the full extent of the damage sustained. At the same time it is a priority for us to continue to provide support for the government relief efforts at Reliant Park" said Shea Guinn, President, SMG-Reliant Park.

Current assessments of the Reliant Park site, Reliant Stadium, Reliant Center and Reliant Arena follows:

Reliant Park Site:
There was no flooding at Reliant Park although numerous trees have been uprooted and signage is down throughout the property. Also, there are downed street lights, stop lights and cables on the streets immediately surrounding Reliant Park.

Reliant Stadium:
Several large pieces of the translucent cloth-like fabric roofing material were torn by the hurricane force winds of Ike. The exact cause of the torn fabric is under further review. A preliminary structural inspection has been conducted by Walter P Moore, the engineering firm which designed the building's structural systems, and indicates that there is no damage to the primary roof structure. A more detailed inspection of all aspects of the facility will continue over the next few days.

Wind damage and wind driven water damage also occurred in various areas of Reliant Stadium. Clean up of debris in the Stadium is underway and the damage assessment will continue with the engineers and construction contractors throughout the week.

The roof manufacturer will conduct an inspection of the fabric roof material this week. Once this assessment is complete, more detailed information can be provided as to when Reliant Stadium will become operational for events.
