Hurricane kit tip: Save information on a UBS drive

Staying in contact with people during the hurricane is important. But remembering email address, banking and credit card phone numbers and other important documents is often the last thing on people's mind until after the storm.

A tip from an 11 News viewer is to save all these numbers on a portable UBS drive (sometimes called Jump Drive) that you can insert into any computer, which comes in handy when evacuated to hotels or other areas outside you home.

A suggested list of documents to put on the UBS drive include:

1. Emergency checklist of everything you need to take with you when evacuating.

2. List of emergency provisions such as food, batteries, supplies, and other necessities.

3. List of what you need in a first aid kit.

4. Medical files, including a list of all your medications and allergies. Plus your medical history in case someone else needs to access your files.

5. Phone numbers: A list of all of your important contacts: attorney, broker, CPA, insurance (home & car), home alarm, credit card companies, tree/yard service, FEMA, and any other important business numbers that you may need to call in an emergency.

6. List of personal phone numbers of family and friends.

7. E-mail addresses of family and friends.

8. Photographs of your immeidate family in case they are needed for emergency identification.

9. Photographs of pets - in case they go missing during the storm.

10. Side, front and rear pictures of your car, trucks and campers.

11. One photograph of all each side of your home.

12. Pictures of any other important items that you might need to identify.

13. Important documents can be scanned and saves on the drive.

14. Be care of placing financial data, credit card numbers and other information on the UBS drive. While they can be password secured, you don't want strangers accessing this information.

15. Create a UBS drive for everyone in the household and send a couple to people not living in the area, just in case.
