Electrical precautions when evacuating

Hurricane Ike is anticipated to be a major hurricane threat. If you are evacuating, remember to do the following:

-- Turn off the electricity at the main circuit breaker before leaving your home. This will help protect appliances from power surges.

-- Given that a potential power outage may last several days, have enough flashlights and batteries on hand. Try to avoid using candles to light your home.

-- Avoid downed, damaged or loose power lines and report them immediately to your local law enforcement or fire department.

-- If possible, do not walk through open water. If a downed power line has fallen into the water, you risk being electrocuted.

-- Never use charcoal grills or generators indoors, including in garages. Both items produce high levels of carbon monoxide that can reach lethal levels in enclosed spaces.

-- Do not use electrical or gas appliances that are wet and do not turn on damaged appliances because of the hazards of electric shock or fire.

Local Houston - Galveston Resources
Report any power outages to CenterPoint Energy by calling 713-207-2222 or 800-332-7143. CenterPoint handles all power outage requests regardless of electric provider.
Keep a fully-charged mobile phone nearby so that you can make an emergency call even in the event of a power outage.

-- Have a battery-powered radio on hand so Houston-Galveston residents can tune into radio frequency KTRH 740 AM to hear about current storm conditions, road closures, as well as progress on electricity restoration.
