Hurricane kit tip: Save information on a UBS drive

Staying in contact with people during the hurricane is important. But remembering email address, banking and credit card phone numbers and other important documents is often the last thing on people's mind until after the storm.

A tip from an 11 News viewer is to save all these numbers on a portable UBS drive (sometimes called Jump Drive) that you can insert into any computer, which comes in handy when evacuated to hotels or other areas outside you home.

Because many wastewater plants are still without electricity, there may not be enough power for their sewer lines (lift stations) to push the sewage to the wastewater plants. This may cause sewage to back-up into your home through places like toilets and bathtubs.

Sewage contains germs that can cause illness, including E.coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Hepatitis A, and Shigella. Symptoms from being exposed to sewage may include diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, chills, and vomiting. Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms.

Catholic Charities Staff and Volunteers will be giving out food and water at St. Christopher Catholic Church at 8150 Park Place Blvd in Pasadena. They will also be servicing the public High Island Saturday, Sept. 20.

There are currently no Point of Distribution (POD) operating within the city of Pasadena. After Hurricane Ike, a POD was located at PAL Gym, located at the intersection of Red Bluff and Southmore, and later relocated to Pasadena Memorial Stadium.

During its operation, the Pasadena POD processed an average of 500-600 vehicles per hour and, in total, provided assistance to more than 19,000 people.

City officials say that residents should take the following precautions before drinking or bathing:

City of Friendswood officials say that approximately 70 percent of the area has electric power and anticipate full power within the next few days.

Food supply, they say, is adequate, with groceries and businesses open. Fuel supply is available, but anticipate lines.

All Friendswood roadways are open for traffic.

FISD and CCISD schools are still closed until further notice.

Officials ask residents to make sure that their household trash is bagged as usual. Any green waste that is placed in trash bags should be placed alongside the household trash.

Galveston residents can pickup mail today; site near Galveston in the works

The USPS says that all of the mail destined to Galveston is securely held in the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center. The mail was untouched by Ike.

The USPS is finalizing a temporary location near Galveston Island, probably in Texas City or La Marque, that will be ready to provide mail to Galveston residents by Thursday, Sept. 25. There, residents will be able to pick-up their mail.

The location and the date of the site will be announced once the location lease is signed this week.

Port of Houston Authority facilities resumed normal operations at all terminals Thursday in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

The U.S. Coast Guard granted PHA clearance for all of its facilities late Wednesday.
PHA will open its Barbours Cut, Bayport and Turning Basin terminals on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. until noon, and 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Large gains for Waste Management in garbage pickups

Waste Management is reporting that there has been a big jump, around 40 percent to 100 percent, in the volume of garbage placed at the curb for collection.

The company is collecting garbage from its residential and commercial customers on a majority of its routes in the Houston metro area. They expect that this growth in the amount of garbage will continue for the next week at least, as more power and water services are restored.

Patients evacuated from Galveston return to Houston

Forty-one Shriners Hospitals for Children-Galveston patients, families and hospital staff, who evacuated last week from Hurricane Ike, arrived Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Shriners Hospital for Children-Houston in the Texas Medical Center.

All of them were evacuated to a College Station middle school.

The Shriners Hospital for Children-Galveston, meanwhile, remains closed for an undetermined length of time.

Galveston hospital officials are in the process of regrouping their more than 300 employees who evacuated.

City Public Works Department crews have been busily re-establishing water service across the island. Most areas behind the Seawall now have water, but residents and emergency personnel are under a strict conservation advisory.

"We are asking everyone to use our limited water resources very sparingly," urged Deputy City Manager Brandon Wade. "Our system has diminished capacity from storm damage and is suffering from many leaks. We are asking our workers and residents to use water conservatively until further notice."

The UTMB Montgomery County Health Department will offer free tetanus shots to residents on September 18 and 19. The vaccines will available at 701 E. Davis (105 W) in Conroe from 3 - 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

The Department urges residents to be extremely cautious around debris and other storm hazards because of the increased risk of exposure to tetanus. Individuals can be exposed to tetanus through the soil, structural fragments (especially dirty nails), and human and animal feces.

Tetanus is a serious but preventable disease that causes severe muscle spasms, lockjaw and even death.

The Animal Incident Command Center - Galveston Island, set up to rescue stray and stranded animals in the wake of Hurricane Ike, rescued 200 animals in the two days they were open.

"We are close to capacity and we have no doubt we will exceed our resources by the end of today," stated Caroline Dorsett, Animal Incident Command Center Director. "We are hoping to reunite animals with their owners as quickly as possible," she added.

The Emergency Management Operations for the City of Conroe has asked the Citizens of Conroe to separate construction debris and move tree debris only to the front of their property and place just behind the curb for pick-up by city Public Works Crews. The federal government will reimburse the state of Texas and affected local governments for 100 percent of eligible emergency debris-removal work and emergency protective measures performed for a 14-day period retroactive to Sept. 13, the date of President Bush's major disaster declaration for Hurricane Ike.

Noah's Ark has been severely damaged by hurricane Ike.

The cattery has been flooded, outside kennels crushed and the roof of the horse barn damaged from fallen tree limbs.

Among many of our immediate needs, is re-erecting a 700'-9' fence that partially encloses our dogs yard that allows the dogs supervised free play time.

Re-erecting this fence frees the volunteers to work on other necessary projects instead of walking dogs on a leash.

Health officials continue to urge kidney dialysis patients affected by Hurricane Ike to call (866) 407-3773 to locate dialysis services. Many dialysis patients have evacuated from coastal areas to other parts of Texas. Others have remained in counties where their usual treatment services are not available.

The toll-free emergency locator service is available 24 hours a day and is provided by the Texas End Stage Renal Disease Network and the Texas End Stage Renal Disease Emergency Coalition.

Dialysis patients are encouraged to watch fluid-intake and to heed dietary precautions.

The Montgomery Country Animal Shelter at 8535 Hwy 242 in Conroe is in a TERRIBLE PLIGHT!

They have 120+ dogs and 200+ cats, all rescued in this area from Hurricane Ike, many pure breeds as well as mixes.

The shelter has no power, and the confinement area is wet, totally in the dark with no windows and no air circulation.

Last Thursday the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) launched Operation Safe Shelter, a new emergency service that provides registered sex offender information to evacuation shelter personnel.

Since Operation Safe Shelter's launch, emergency shelters have provided 5,555 evacuee names for OAG personnel to compare with the Department of Public Safety's sex offender registry. As of today, the OAG review uncovered 18 confirmed sex offenders. An additional 36 possible matches remain under review but have not yet been confirmed by OAG personnel.

Hurricane Ike has left many Texas homeowners with damaged roofs. Repairs to these roofs can take time. In order to mitigate additional damage that could result from rain, homeowners can have plastic sheeting installed over the damaged area by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractors, in a program provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Houston-area YMCA facilities that have power are opening their doors to the community for showers and battery charging. Even if you do not have a YMCA membership, you may go to any open YMCA and charge your cell phone and laptop or take a shower.
