A critique from the nosebleed seats: U2 rocks Reliant

Taylor

My husband was sitting next to me. It was dark in there, but thanks to the 80 bajillion or so swirling lights and camera flashes, I could see that he was clearly impressed.

He leaned over and said, "Look, he's flying around now, and he's wearing a laser shirt."

"Of course," I said.

We were watching U2, after all.

I finally caved in and went to see Bono & Co. at Reliant Wednesday night.

I've never been their biggest fan (I tend to prefer my rock stars smaller and a little more sullen), but I figured if they've been cool for 30 years, they must be doing something right.

And just how does one remain relevant for longer than I've been alive?

Apparently, it takes a big huge spaceship stage (the biggest ever constructed, I'm told), a lot of smoke, more lights than you can shake a stick at, a bunch of extras holding paper masks over their face, a mission to save the world, a laser shirt, a pair of sunglasses and a whole mess of really good rock songs.

Sounds easy enough, right?

I'll admit that I was pretty determined to be indifferent, but it's hard to be "meh" about a band that puts on such a fantastic show.

They're energetic, they sound great, you already know all the words, their stage rocks and Bono can work a crowd like nobody's business.

I kind of tuned out a little when they got to the saving the world part, but I did get the feeling that they're genuine and positive about it -- rather than preachy and judgey, and they really seemed to enjoy being in Texas.

And that's saying something when the weather feels like hot breath and you've got to perform for two hours in a leather jacket.

I even caught myself boogying a couple of times when they were playing "Elevation" and "Vertigo." (Normally, if I'm caught dancing my friends are under the direct order to take me to the hospital and have my stomach pumped.)

So my very unprofessional verdict is this: If you haven't seen them, you really should. They're one of the biggest bands ever, and like my husband said, you don't pick up 30 bajillion or so fans by accident.
