Favre and the Packers...Just another day in the NFL

I've been watching with great interest the saga involving future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. This is a perfect example of the business side of a game we all love. Football is played between the lines. It is tough and physical on the field and sometimes it can be just as brutal off the field. Favre retired earlier this year only to try to unretire just as we are getting ready for two a days to begin. The tough part about this one, it involves someone very close to my heart.

I'm baaaaaaaack!

I had a great couple of weeks off. Being away from the office helps clear the old head a bit and is good for the soul. Vacations can provide some great memories and this year certainly will be one to remember for me. I jumped on a plane with my oldest son and a close friend to do some golfing in Scotland for a few days. Across the pond, things are different when hitting the little white ball around. They don't have carts so you get your exercise.

I don't know about where you are working or what you are doing but at KHOU, it's co workers coming and going during these summer months. I'm out of here for the next couple of weeks for a little fun and relaxation. I never know what I'm going to face when I return other than 1000 emails and a mountain of mail to answer. That is standard but here are seven things I hope to see when I get back.

We are getting ready for the NBA draft. Yeh right in the middle of the Astros woes and just prior to Texans getting started, it's high stakes for NBA franchises. It's often been said, "you've gotta have the horses to win the race." That is certainly the case as Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey, along with all of his draft experts, get ready to add young players to make the playoffs and win a postseason series.

Tiger win even more impressive!

How would you have liked to have been a fly on the wall when the doctor told Tiger Woods the preferred treatment for a stress fracture in his left knee was three weeks on crutches and three weeks of inactivity. The news coming just prior to the U. S. Open on the course he grew up playing. There was no way he wasn't going to participate at Torrey Pines with all the history of that track in his early years. And so Tiger looked at the doctor and in the presence of his swing coach Hank Haney said "I'm playing in the U.S. Open, and I'm going to win."

Tiger/Rocco battle... It was for everyone!

The funniest thing happened today in our home. Everyone was watching Tiger and Rocco matching shot for shot looking for a chance to win the U.S. Open Golf Championship. Tiger looked like the Incredible Hulk and focused like an eagle looking for prey. Rocco, on the other hand, was having the time of his life. He was not looking like the Incredible Hulk, but was smiling and making interesting facial expressions. We were like everyone else thinking Tiger was going to win but rooting for The Rock Man to hang in there and make it interesting. Boy, did he ever do that!

It's been a good day in the office. I was in around 2:30 just in time to catch the Astros playing their final game with the Brewers. It was also the first round of the U.S. Open out on a beautiful course in Southern California, Torrey Pines. I am often asked what my day is like and this is one every sports fan covets.

Do team meetings really work? The Astros thought so after one game.

Everyone was on the edge of their seats yesterday afternoon waiting to see what the players looked like after a team meeting. The Astros have been playing mediocre baseball and management was ticked off. So the players were about to get an ear full and from what we understand, there was no doubting the theme of the setting.

When the alarm clock went off at 4:30am, I thought I was nuts but yet so excited. I was going fishing down in the Texas Gulf Coast, Matagorda Bay on the east side to be exact and I was ready. My wife has a hard time understanding why I do these kind of activities, not because of being out in nature, she likes me doing that, but questions why I would get up so early. It's just one of those things that is hard to explain unless it's in your blood. I think it should be requried for everyone.

No more "Pacman" but what are the Cowboys doing?

There is a love affair going on up highway 45 in Big "D". The Cowboys took a flyer on Adam "Pacman" Jones and in two days of offseason workouts, they think the sun rises and sets on the guy. Jones is one talented player with absolutely no brain in his head. He was a number one draft choice of the Tennessee Titans back in 2005 and since that time has had more legal problems than Britney Spears. He's been arrested six times and been involved in 12 incidents requiring police intervention including sitting out the entire 2007 after being linked to a shooting at a Las Vegas strip club. Now he's looking for a new start and his current mentor, Deion Sanders wants him to drop the "Pacman" nickname and I don't blame him. That is a tarnished image.

Station management here did a classy thing by putting together a final farewell luncheon over at the Houstonian to honor a man we love and respect. Along with the current anchors, former anchors and many of the KHOU managers, we had a chance to thank him for the impact he has had on our lives.
