Texans doing the right thing in free agency

If things keep coming together during this offseason for the Texans like it started with the signing of defensive end Antonio Smith, this average NFL defense just might become something special in a hurry. Give Texans general manager Rick Smith credit for being able to make a deal and do it fast. The hometown pro football team was looking for the other bookend to Mario Williams and they have hit the jackpot in free agency! They certainly paid a jackpot for him but that is the nature of the game.

I love that Smith really wanted to be here and not play games. He is reunited with a coach he has much respect for in new defensive coordinator Frank Bush so he came to town hoping things would be worked out. When it did, we didn't lose the player, that represented the Cardinals in the Super Bowl, to New York, Philadelphia, Tampa or Altanta. Smith is our guy now. We are all hoping the 35 million dollars Bob McNair shelled out will pay huge dividends.

In today's game, it is not just the money that attracts players, it is the recruiting. Management, coaches and players all have to wear out their cell phones and blackberries texting and convincing free agents that their organization can be something special. Signing Smith shows that players are beginning to believe that winning BIG is just around the corner for the Houston Texans and that is so refreshing.

Along with Smith, they also signed quarterback Dan Orlovsky. So two of their greatest needs are in the fold and that makes a huge difference in your approach going into the fast approaching NFL draft.

Hey Rick, don't stop now. On paper this is looking really good.
